IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ACTION COMICS #1007
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Steve Epting
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Kobra Cult conspiracy ensnares Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, drawing the attention of the Man of Steel. But be careful, Superman – there’s more lurking in the shadows of Metropolis than just a snake cult.
STEPHEN: ANother great issue from BMB as we really see that Superman is more than just a super-powered hammer, as he tries to talk the Red Mist into giving up the life of crime. The scenes with Jimmy are great, and the final page reveal is a nice treat for comic book fans.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Chirs Bachalo
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: You know what’s annoying? Having to save J. Jonah Jameson’s life. Sure, he’s been on Spidey’s side for a little while, but that’s after YEARS of him making Spider-Man’s life a living heck. I feel like this amount of responsibility should come with even more power. Anyway, who, other than most of New York, would want to punish J. Jonah Jameson?
STEPHEN: Oh, this should be good.
BATMAN BEYOND #28
Writer: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Norm Rapmund, Brett Booth
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Joker prepares to deliver his fatal punchline: Everything and the kitchen sink hits the fan for Batman and Robin, and even with Dick Grayson’s help, the Dynamic Duo of tomorrow and Bruce Wayne may not stand a chance. Will Joker turn Terry’s brother into the new Jason Todd? Is now a good time for Terry and Bruce to clash? And why are Neo-Gothamites cheering on the Clown Prince? Will anyone survive “The Final Joke?”
WAYNE: This book is a great one, worthy of the wonderful animated series that spawned it. Highly recommended!
DETECTIVE COMICS #997
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Jaime Mendoza
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There’s no man on Earth more convinced that he knows what makes Batman tick than Dr. Hugo Strange! Which makes him a natural target for the thing that’s hunting Batman, unless Batman gets there first!
WAYNE: This great storyline is gearing us up for Detective Comics #1000, really enjoying this examination of the Dark Knight. Don’t miss it!
FLASH #63
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Rafael Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It’s two against one when Gemini tag-teams the Flash! The threat is doubled for the Scarlet Speedster when Gemini gets their hands on the Strength Force. But where’s that leave Powerhouse? She and the Flash must ride or die together in order to get her super-strength back, but they’ll have to survive a trip through the Strength Force first. Follow along in the Flash’s footsteps on the next leg of his Force Quest!
STEPHEN: It’s been a while since I’ve read the Flash, but since we’re checking it out on this week’s Dueling Review podcast, I think it is about time to find out what Barry’s been up to. Plus, I have it that this issue might be really good.
ICE CREAM MAN #9
Writer: W. Maxwell Prince
Artist: Martin Morazzo
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: A wild western one-shot which witnesses the way the world once was.
MATTHEW: Finally, we may get a little backstory on the mysterious cowboy and why the Ice Cream Man is what he is. This is a mean little book, in the best old-school EC Comics way.
NEWBURY & HOBBES: THE UNDYING #4
Writer: George Man
Artist: Dan Boultwood
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: An explosive end to the first comic outing of the steampunk detective duo.
From original creator George Mann (Dark Souls, Doctor Who).
INGRID: This is the final issue in this story arc, with the Holmesian duo of Newbury & Hobbes hot on the heels of the bad guy in this steampunk mystery tale. Engaging characters, fun artwork and an exciting story put this one on my list for the week.
PETER CANNON, THUNDERBOLT #1
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Caspar Wijngaard
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: His level of genius is matched only by his heroics, and in humanity’s darkest hour, he’s the hero they need the most-alas, poor humanity. Peter Cannon-the man known as Thunderbolt-is only too happy to leave civilization to face its end. Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + the Divine) teams up with powerhouse artist Caspar Wijngaard (Doctor Aphra) as he returns to the superhero genre with a dark, humorous and relentless love song to the genre.
Well, “Love Song” in a Leonard Cohen Love Song kind of way. Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt: saving a world he hates.
MATTHEW: I’ve always loved Peter Cannon since I first encountered him back in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Here’s hoping this is the book that puts him back on the map.
RIVERS OF LONDON: ACTION AT A DISTANCE #4
Writer: Andrew Cartmel
Artist: Brian Williamson
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Occult secrets of World War II revealed as Peter digs into fan-favorite Nightingale’s past!
A new story in Ben Aaronovitch’s bestselling urban fantasy series, now an ongoing comic.
INGRID: Imagine, if you will, a secret spy agency in England staffed by practitioners of magic. Now imagine that one of the main characters is researching an old case of his mentor’s – it’s a spy thriller circa 1957 involving nuclear accidents and the murders of several young women. This is a fascinating story that’s more than just urban fantasy.
STAR TREK Q CONFLICT #1
Writer: Scott Tipton, David Tipson
Artist: David Messina
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When a dispute between godlike beings threatens the galaxy, it will take all of Starfleet’s best captains to stop them. Join James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Kathryn Janeway, and Benjamin Sisko as they go head-to-head in a competition that will determine the fate of the Earth and beyond. Will they be able to emerge victorious, or will they be torn apart by The Q Conflict? A soon-to-be-classic six-part miniseries begins here! The crews of The Next Generation, The Original Series, Voyager, and Deep Space 9 come together to face their biggest challenge yet!
WAYNE: This creative team has made great Star Trek in the past, so I’m really looking forward to this one! It’s also cool to see this many of the “generations” working together, so it should be great fun!
THE TERRIFICS #12
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Viktor Bogdanovic
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The Terrifics disbanded, but they’re going to need to get back together if they’re going to save Mr. Terrific from Doc Dread’s new team, the Dreadfuls! Plus, Rex Mason takes a huge plunge, Phantom Girl bolts Bgztl and Plastic Man stretches out the family drama with his son Luke, who’s struggling with his own super-elastic powers. Will our heroes reunite in time to save Mr. Terrific – from an evil version of themselves?!
MATTHEW: The best book of the ill-fated New Age line, Terrifics has been getting better and better. It would be great to see it break 24 issues.
