IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #2
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Mahmud A. Asrar
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: BEYOND THE SAVAGE BORDER!
CONAN finds himself beyond the Black River, surrounded by the warlike PICTS! But the tribesmen may be the least of his worries if he cannot fight his way through the demonic beasts slithering around the forest! The epic return of the mighty Conan continues…
STEPHEN: There was enough in the first issue to have me try issue #2. I think this series will land on its feet, and the bigger picture will become more clear as we move toward issue #5.
INVADERS #1
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Artist: Carlos Magno
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: THE GREATEST GENERATION OF MARVEL HEROES IS BACK – TO STOP ONE OF THEIR OWN! In commemoration of Marvel’s 80th anniversary and springing from events in the pages of AVENGERS and THE BEST DEFENSE, the Marvel Universe’s first super-team is back! CAPTAIN AMERICA. THE HUMAN TORCH. THE WINTER SOLDIER. NAMOR. They fought in WORLD WAR II together as THE INVADERS. But now NAMOR is the enemy, a global threat more powerful than ever. His deadly plans are as deep and far-reaching as the ocean and REVELATIONS about his past could THREATEN the MARVEL UNIVERSE! It’s up to his old teammates to stop him, but what chance do they have against the man who knows their every move? “War Ghost” begins here!
MATTHEW: Namor’s squarely in the villain camp again and I could not be happier. On the one hand, it’s weird that so many Golden Agers are still around, but it makes for a nice anniversary series with a creative team I’m really excited about.
OUTPOST ZERO #6
Writer: Sean Kelley McKeever
Artist: Alexandre Tefenkgi
Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Mitchell is itching for a fight — with his dad, his sister, his friends, anybody. Luckily, fighting is the Outpost’s most popular form of entertainment, and what does it matter if most fighters don’t live to see their next birthday?
INGRID: We get to see the grittier side of Outpost Zero. This is life in a small town amplified by having it be a town literally no one can get away from, short of dying. Life is dangerous and precious. Growing up here is not easy. It’s a fascinating and suspenseful read that’s full of quiet drama as well as some honest-to-goodness mystery.
PRINCELESS: FIND YOURSELF #4
Writer: Jeremy Whitley
Artist: Emily Martin
Publisher: Action Lab Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This is it! Adrienne vs. The Black Knight for the fate of her sister! Everything has led up to this and the world of Princeless will never be the same. And finally, the identity of the Black Knight will be revealed. Meanwhile, Devin and company are in too deep.
INGRID: Okay, so I may have been late to the party, but I really like Princeless. The characters are stubborn and engaging. Adrienne is trying to figure out what she’s supposed to be doing with her life. It’s an all-ages book, but there are politics and intrigue in it – and now we’re finally going to find out just who the Black Knight is!
RICK VEITCH THE ONE HC
Writer: Rick Veitch
Artist: Rick Veitch
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $29.99
SOLICITATION: The classic revisionist superhero saga that predates Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and presented a shocking worldview that almost predicted today’s political climate! Rick Veitch’s groundbreaking series has been called the last word on superheroes. It is a world-spanning, continent-crushing, over-the-top adventure story that brings the United States and Russia to the brink of annihilation… from both nuclear warheads and crazed superheroes-run-amok!
MATTHEW: It’s easy to call something “ahead of its time,” but this series has proven itself to fit the bill. Presaging modern takes on comics, the metatextual nature of new media and even the grimdark 1990s, The One is comics that everyone should read. If you ask me, this should be as celebrated as The Dark Knight Returns, if not more so…
THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #41
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Jamie McKelvie
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Back in black.
MATTHEW: The final arc has begun and people who have missed out on the WicDiv train are about to be really upset that they missed it all. This is consistently one of the best books on the stands, month over month.
