IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ACTION COMICS #1006
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Ryan Sook
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Red Cloud sets her sights on someone close to Superman, but how can the Man of Steel stop a villain he can’t touch? As the invisible mafia controlling Metropolis’ underworld steps more into the light, its leader finally stands revealed with a secret that will have massive implications for Superman and Clark Kent!
STEPHEN: Action Comics #1005 made my list of the best comics of 2018, and with the growing cast of characters, and Superman dealing with someone of the world of magic, I am down for this week’s issue, and hope that it is just as good as the previous one.
ARCHIE 1941 #4
Writer: Mark Waid, Brian Augustyn
Artist: Peter Krause, Kelly Fitzpatrick
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Archie is headed into action while the world watches and waits. Meanwhile, times are tough at home in Riverdale, while shortages are leading to impending rations, tensions are mounting. However, despite an uncertain future, unexpected relationships begin to form.
STEPHEN: Mark Waid brought Archie into a more modern age with the Archie series, and now he’s jumped back to the early days of the comic to tell a tale of what happens when Archie and his friends head off to war. This has been a tale of sadness, loss, and makes you rethink the greatest generation.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Mahmud A. Asrar
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: BY CROM, THE GREATEST SWORD-AND-SORCERY HERO RETURNS TO MARVEL!
From an age undreamed…hither came Conan the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet…
Robert E. Howard’s creation returns to comics, in an epic tale as only MARVEL could bring you! Conan’s travels have brought him to the far reaches of the unkown, from his birthplace in Cimmeria to the kingdom of Aquilonia and all in between. As his fighting prowess allows him to carve his way through life, so too does it attract the forces of death!
The all-new ages-spanning saga begins here, by writer Jason Aaron (THE MIGHTY THOR, STAR WARS) and artist Mahmud Asrar (UNCANNY X-MEN, ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS), as Conan’s destiny is forever changed!
Parental Advisory
STEPHEN: THe Conan comics of the 70s first introduced me to the character, and while I enjoyed the heck out of the series that Dark Horse had for decades, I am very interested to see what Marvel will do now that they have control of the property once again. Plus, Parental Advisory tag, which means more violence than nudity.
ALSO: Be on the lookout for this week’s Dueling Review podcast, where Matthew and I will review the issue in detail.
EMPTY MAN #3
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Jesus Hervas
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Chaos descends on the Kerry family’s neighborhood as the mysterious cult known as the Whisper Oracles engages in a full-fledged assault to “save” their mother.
STEPHEN: This is a creepy as heck story that makes me feel uncomfortable, horrified, and paranoid. It’s by Cullen Bunn, and his work is always pushing many limit and boundaries. If you sit in the middle of that Venn diagram, then The Empty man is for you.
UMBRELLA ACADEMY HOTEL OBLIVION #4
Writer: Gerard Way
Artist: Nick Filardi
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A heart-to-heart with Mother leads Vanya (a.k.a. The White Violin) to reassess what makes her special. Two of her siblings are caught in a shootout, and two more have a cosmic moment, while the bad guys infiltrate the Hotel.
STEPHEN: THis is everything you expect from The Umbrella Academy with a touch of remorse and of course action. With the Netflix series arriving soon, I expect readers will want to pick up this series now.
ROBOT OVERLORD: That is a rundown of some of the comics we recommend this week, what is on your must-read list?
