IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BETTIE PAGE #1
Writer: David Avallone
Artist: Colton Worley
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: She’s more modest than Ms. Blaise, but peels more than Ms. Emma. She out-vamps Vampirella, but she’s sweeter than Honey West. She put the mod in model, and the bangs in bang-bang. Now the world can know the truth: her classified adventures back in 1951 Hollywood have been declassified. Dynamite, David Avallone and Colton Worley are proud to present The Secret Diary of Bettie Page, in handy comic book form.
RODRIGO: WAIT THAT LADY FROM THE ROCKETEER IS GETTING HER OWN SERIES!?
BUBBA HO-TEP & COSMIC BLOOD-SUCKERS #4
Writer: Joe Lansdale, Joshua Jabcuga
Artist: Tadd Galusha
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Elvis, John Henry, and the rest of the team get ready to take on a horde of vampires and an army of skeletons as they approach the house!
STEPHEN: I’ve only recently started reading the vast catalog of Joe Lansdale’s works, and while I enjoyed the movie, Bubba Ho-Tep & The Cosmic Blood-Suckers is something completely different – and not bad. If you want to see Elvis get it on with a ghost, then this is your must-read book this week.
CRIMSON LOTUS #1
Writer: John Arcudi
Artist: Mindy Lee
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Before she became Lobster Johnsons greatest adversary, the Crimson Lotus was a young girl whose family was caught up in the Russo-Japanese War. Thirty years later, the Lotus exacts her revenge with terrifying international effects, and two spies must try to chase her through China before they become flies in her web.
RODRIGO: The Mignolaverse continues to spread in all directions! At this stage I’m glad to hop in and out of titles to see what’s happening, rather than trying to keep up with every last thing.
PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #4
Writer: Rob Williams
Artist: Sergio Davila
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Pandora’s army is here. The Earth is defenseless, and war has arrived. Scarab, in Earth orbit, faces the might of the invaders firsthand, while Samson attempts to hold back an overwhelming force alone. Meanwhile, at the hospital bed of a wounded child, Black Terror must hold the line against horrifically transformed The Death-Defying Devil. P:andora wants the girl Imani dead. But why?
INGRID: This is such a classic type of superhero story, but there’s something so refreshing and interesting about the characters. This is an epic story, and so beautifully drawn.
REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES: THE NICODEMUS JOB #5
Writer: Brian Clevinger
Artist: Meredith McClaren
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It would be a dang shame if all that planning and heisting was for nothing and our heroes ended up captured. Or worse! Gosh, I hope that doesn’t happen. But, hey, this is the final issue and this isn’t an ongoing series and these guys don’t have a movie deal or an ’80s cartoon franchise to back them up, so anything goes!
INGRID: It’s the last chapter in an awesome heist story, where, with any luck, the bad guy gets his comeuppance! History! Adventure! Science! Books! And did I mention adventure?
STEPHEN: Yeah, I’m down with anything from the creator of Atomic Robo, and this series has been very good. So, if you haven’t read the other books in this series, today is a good day to dive into that back issue bin and do some binge reading this holiday weekend.
SMOOTH CRIMINALS #1
Writer: Kurt Lustgarten, Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith
Artist: Leisha Riddel
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There are certain things Brenda expects to find while hacking: money, secrets, occasional pictures of cats. She is NOT expecting to find a cryogenically frozen master thief from the 60s. Mia is everything Brenda is not-cool, confident, beautiful. And utterly unprepared for the digital age. Despite their differences, the two will need to team up to find out what happened to Mia-and how to pull off the heist of the century. Kiwi Smith and Kurt Lustgarten (Misfit City) team with breakout artist Leisha-Marie Riddel (Goldie Vance) in a story about felonies and friendship.
RODRIGO: You had me at “from the artist of Goldie Vance”. This sounds like a lot of fun, although it’s a little strange that it’s the same premise as Austin Powers, right?
STEPHEN: I really enjoyed the heck out of this issue, and though it relies on a lot of tropes, it is worth checking out.
