The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
DISNEY FROZEN: BREAKING BOUNDARIES #2
Writer: Joe Caramagna
Artist: Kawaii Creative Studio
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Anna and new friend Mari try their hands at the many jobs Arendelle has to offer–from baking in the bakery, to being storekeepers, to harvesting ice . . . Finding a perfect fit is a challenge. Meanwhile, Elsa delves deeper into the mystery in the western woods!
RODRIGO: Everyone, including me, speculated that Dark Horse would lose all its ties with Disney once they acquired Marvel comics. But here we are, there’s money to be made and comics to enjoy.
ELVIRA MISTRESS OF THE DARK #1
Writer: David Avallone
Artist: Dave Acosta
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Nevermore! The Mistress of the Dark time-travels to 1838 Philadelphia for a black-cat-and-mouse game between America’s greatest poet of horror and the scariest tyrant of medieval Europe. Elvira and Edgar Allen Poe face down a raven-ous foe, in the second chapter of ELVIRA: TIMESCREAM.
From David Avallone (Bettie Page) and Dave Acosta (Twelve Devils Dancing), the amazing team who brought you DOC SAVAGE: RING OF FIRE and TWILIGHT ZONE: THE SHADOW.
INGRID: We’re rapidly closing in on fall, and Halloween is just around the corner. Edgar Allen Poe, a vampire, Elvira, Elvira’s cleavage – this light-hearted read has it all.
JOE GOLEM: OCCULT DETECTIVE #1
Writer: Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden
Artist: Norm Rapmund, Brett Booth
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: 3.50
SOLICITATION: Forty years after disaster left Lower Manhattan submerged in thirty feet of water, children have begun disappearing below the surface. In this new series, Joe Golem hunts the terrifying creature that has been pulling children into the depths of the canals.
RODRIGO: I’m always interested in more stuff from Mike Mignola, this looks like a great combination of noir and a Universal creature feature.
MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 #1
Writer: Joel Hodgson, Harold Buchholz, Matt McGinnis, Mary Robinson, Seth Robinson, Sharyl Volpe
Artist: Todd Nauck, Mike Manly
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: MST3K as you’ve never seen it before!
The riffing hilarity of Mystery Science Theater 3000 comes to comics when Kinga Forrester pairs her Kingachrome Liquid Medium with her latest invention–the Bubbulat-R! Jonah Heston, Crow T. Robot, and Tom Servo find themselves thrust into the 2-D world of public domain comics, with riffing as their only defense!
* Created for comics by Joel Hodgson!
* The hit Netflix show has come to comics!
* Variant cover by longtime MST3K DVD artist Steve Vance!
INGRID: I confess, I am a long time fan, and the idea of them taking their riffing to comic books somehow intrigues me. And it isn’t Jonah and the bots sitting in the corner of the panels either – they become part of the comic, and wacky hijinks ensue!
RODRIGO: If this is actually going to be riffs on old public domain comics this could be truly hilarious. Also hilarious, the promotional materials referring to this as THE HIT NETFLIX SHOW! Although I guess that is the version this comic is based on.
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #26
Writer: Scott Lobdell
Artist: Pete Woods
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Jason Todd’s about to take this vigilante game to a whole new level. His partners, Bizarro and Artemis? Gone! His mentor, Batman? Out! His base of operations, Gotham City? Abandoned. Cast out and alone, Red Hood embarks on a bold, brutal new mission, with a new costume, new weapons and a new plan to punish evildoers across the DCU. Plus, Pete Woods (JUSTICE LEAGUE) joins writer Scott Lobdell as this new era begins!
STACY: Jason Todd is running solo this time, and this new direction feels like a completely different character. I thoroughly enjoyed this issue and for the first time liked where it felt Jason was going.
TALES FROM THE CRYPT PIN BADGES
Price: $9.95 (each)
SOLICITATION: Fans of Tales of the Crypt can decorate their jackets with these extra large enamel pins of either the Keeper (holding a bloody axe!) or the series’ chilling logo!
STACY: Yep, not a comic, but a collectible that I think deserves some attention. These two (sold separately) over-sized enamel pins feature the Crypt Keeper as drawn by legendary Jack Davis holding a bloody meat cleaver and the Tales From The Crypt comic book logo box. Great designs of a classic property coming from Ripper Merchandise, just in time to get ready for Halloween!
THE WEATHERMAN #4
Writer: Jody Leheup
Artist: Nathan Fox
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Every human left alive wants a piece of Nathan Bright—but there’s only so much of him to go around. Enter the Pearl, a crime lord in the business of making revenge as sweet a possible… and death last forever.
INGRID: Not for the faint of heart, this is an edgy and gripping story. Each issue puts a new twist into the works, so you never know quite where it’s going next. A real nail-biter!
WRONG EARTH #1
Writers: Tom Peyer, Paul Constant, Grant Morrison
Artists: Juan Castro, Shannon Wheeler
Publisher: Ahoy Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: AHOY Comics launches with a biting superhero satire! On one world, Dragonflyman and his sidekick Stinger enjoy a life of adventure. On another Earth, the Dragonfly hunts criminal parasites like a lethal exterminator. But what happens when these two heroes change places? By Tom Peyer (Captain Kid, Hourman) and Jamal Igle (Black, Supergirl)! And, a “Golden Age” Stinger solo story, by Paul Constant and Frank Cammuso! Plus: An all-new text story by comics legend Grant Morrison: “‘Hud’ Hornet’s Holiday In Hell,” illustrated by Rob Steen! All this plus a cartoon by Shannon Wheeler!
STACY: Big surprise here! The first issue of the first title of a new publisher, and it reads great. This issue is filled with veteran comic creators and writers, and they look to be having a lot of fun. The main story is familiar yet different and the added extras that make it worth more than the price of admission.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Today is the day! Today you get to discover that one comic that you love! Enjoy your quest!
