Did You Hear? is a weekly examination of headlines in the entertainment industry and a take on what they could mean for the future of the industry and (often), the little geeky bubble that we occupy.
Crisis on Infinite Spocks
Star Trek: Discovery is continuing its inability to separate itself from the events of Star Trek: the Original Series. Variety announced that the latest television show in the Star Trek franchise has cast its own version of Mister Spock. Spock is, arguably, the most iconic character to ever come out of any Trek series and what so many of us take to be the definition of the alien race – Vulcans. His father is Vulcan and his mother human, making Spock a child of two words and he has a habit of revealing secret siblings that are nowhere near as compelling as he is – like Discovery Commander Burnham (The Walking Dead Sonequa Martin-Green).
In this incarnation, Spock will be played by Ethan Peck (Gossip Girl, Madam Secretary), who, despite his litany of television credits, is perhaps most famous for being the grandson of legendary actor – Gregory Peck.
Peck marks the third actor to have played Spock (seventh or eighth if you count all the boys who have played Spock at various points throughout his childhood), and the second in the past decade after Zachary Quinto was cast to play Spock in the Kelvin-verse movies.
Some fans argue that this return to the same well waters down a character that is so recognizable as being played by the late Leonard Nimoy. Star Trek: the Next Generation is the other leviathan in the franchise and it earned this status among the fandom by treading new ground and redefining what viewers thought they knew about the series. It was challenging to the content of The Original Series and, in that way, it was defining.
Other fans are more than pleased to have Discovery become even more beholden to the source material. Afterall, having one foot so firmly rooted in the past is what led to the financial success of the latest series of Star Trek movies headed up by J.J. Abrams.
As ever, Trek remains divisive.
According to IMDB Peck’s rendition of Spock will appear in the season 2 series premier and the third episode.
Deadpool Kills Vegas
Planet Hollywood has announced in a press release that fans who was looking for a fully immersive experience of Deadpool 2: Super Duper Cut will just have to get themselves to Las Vegas.
On August 18th, the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino will feature a live DJ, trivia, costumes, giveaways and more beginning at noon. There will be a pool party all day with Deadpool-themed food and drink. 7:30pm marks the beginning of the full evening’s festivities and all parties are open to the public.
Can’t make it to party with Deadpool tomorrow? Have no fear! The specialty drink (The Sea Breeze), will be available through the end of the month, along with a non-alcoholic option created specifically for The Merc with the Mouth: a chocolate and strawberry milkshake!
Hulu Goes BOOM!
With the success of Marvel’s Runaways it comes as no surprise that Hulu would want to dip their toe back back into the world of comic book adaptations. BOOM! Studios’ critically acclaimed graphic novel Old City Blues by: Giannis Milonogiannis (Prophet, G.I. Joe), from the Arachaia imprint, is their most recent acquisition.
From the BOOM! Website:
“The year is 2048. Southeastern Europe. Built on the ruins of the country once known as Greece, New Athens is a city crawling with life-low-life, that is. From mech smugglers and drug dealers, to corrupt politicians and all-too-powerful corporations, the city is at the mercy of high-tech criminals. And it’s up to Solano, Thermidor, and the rest of the New Athens Special Police to keep the city in order. When the cybernetically augmented founder of a tech corporation called Hayashi is found murdered, it seems to be just another case of cyborg persecution. But Hayashi Corporation’s strange response to the incident raises suspicion in Solano and the Special Police. The mystery they unravel will lead them straight into the wasteland of the Old City.”
There is already some pretty impressive talent attached including: Kerry Washignton (Scandal), will star and executive produce, along with Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, Rango), who is set to direct.
BOOM! currently has a number of series in various stages of development (Lumberjanes and Goldie Vance at Fox jump to mind). Old City Blues is their first project announced for streaming – where several other publishers have found success. With DC Universe on the verge of dropping and the ever present rumour that Disney will be pulling all of their Marvel content onto their own service, BOOM!’s move into the realm of binge-watching does beg the question – how long until BOOM! launches its own platform?
