IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ARCHIE #20
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Pete Woods, Jack Morelli
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It’s the BIGGEST comic event in ARCHIE HISTORY! Archie and Reggie’s ongoing feud reaches a fever pitch that pits the two against each other in a thrill ride on the deadly Serpent’s Tail!
STEPHEN: Archie Comics has been teasing this for a while. If we are to believe the hype, something really bad is about to happen, and I’m totally on board with what Mark Waid is serving up.
CAVE CARSON HAS A CYBERNETIC EYE #8
Writer: Jonathan Rivera
Artist: Michael Avon Oeming
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Cave Carson has a cybernetic eye! Or, more accurately, he had one. After the fallout with the Whisperer and his cult in issue #6, the eye has run amok-and it’s up to Cave and the rest of Team Carson to find it. What’s that cognizant ocular computer chasing, anyhow?
MATTHEW: I’ll be honest: I’m just psyched to see this series continuing past six issues… It’s really good stuff, you guys!
THE FLASH #22
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Howard Porter
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE BUTTON” part four! The cataclysmic events of DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1 continue here! The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive, the two greatest detectives on any world, unite to explore the mystery behind a certain blood-stained smiley button embedded in the Batcave wall. What starts as a simple investigation turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove irresistible to an unwelcome third party—and it’s not who anyone suspects! It’s a mystery woven through time, and the ticking clock starts here!
STEPHEN: THIS IS IT! THE BIG EXCITING REVEAL! Oh.. wait… we have to wait for Doomsday Clock. Still, The Flash, and The Flash, and maybe even The Flash appear in this issue. Definitely a must read for fans of Rebirth and conspiracy theories.
LUKE CAGE #1
Writer: David Walker
Artist: Nelson Blake
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Dr. Noah Burstein, the man who made Luke Cage into the unbreakable hero he is today, is dead. When Luke goes down to New Orleans for the funeral, he finds The Big Easy to be pretty &$#% difficult. Mysterious billionaires, a woman with a secret, amped-up gangs and a shadowy figure all lead Luke to the conclusion that there’s more to his father-figure’s death than meets the eye. He’s looking for answers, and it’s a bad day for anyone in his way!
MATTHEW: Nothing like a good Luke Cage story, especially when they let him put on a shirt. Here’s hoping that Walker can make this as cool as his run on Dynamite’s ‘Shaft’ comic…
NANCY DREW & THE HARDY BOYS: THE BIG LIE #3
Writer: Anthony Del Col
Artist: Werther Dell’Edera
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The team’s plan has been set into motion – but will they get caught in their own trap? The three teen detectives must keep up their appearances as criminals – and also stay alive! – while undercover with a band of thieves dead-set on pulling a major heist in of one of the most heavily-guarded places in Bayport!
STEPHEN: Just when I thought the series was about to take a dip, the creators surprised the heck out of me by turning the issue into a heist flick! If you aren’t reading this, you should. If you are fan of the teenage detective genre, you need to read this. If you are fan of Riverdale, you need to read this. In short, you need to read this series.
THE WICKED + THE DIVINE 455 AD #1
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Andre Araujo
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Nothing lives forever, be it man, god, or empire, but that doesn’t mean you have to go quietly. Join us as Lucifer refuses to fiddle while the Roman Empire burns. The critically acclaimed THE WICKED + THE DIVINE inevitably vandalizes history as it turns to the Sack of Rome. Showcasing the epic art of ANDRÉ LIMA ARAÚJO (Avengers AI, Man Plus), the special is NOT included in the forthcoming fifth volume of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE.
MATTHEW: This book is a really cool concept, and I enjoy the looks into the past of this broad canvas of story. I’ll miss McKelvie, though…
