3) THE CRUSADERS
Another crossover that allowed readers to fill-in-the blanks came in 1977, thanks to Roy Thomas, the writer of ‘The Invaders’ and Bob Rozakis, scribe of ‘Freedom Fighters.’ Both teams came up against groups known as The Crusaders (albeit in two different decades) and each Crusaders team resembled the heroes of the other company. Captain America became Americommando, Uncle Sam The Spirit of ’76 and so on. The most memorable part of the story (Retro Reviewed here) came in the later use of The Spirit of ’76 as one of the replacement Captain Americas to stitch together Steve Rogers’ scattered post-war Marvel Comics history…
