IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BALTIMORE: THE RED KINGDOM #1
Writer: Mike MIgnola, Christopher Golden
Artist: Peter Bergting
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Lord Baltimore is missing. The Red King—evil incarnate—is taking over the world. Baltimore’s team has been driven apart, with some of them dying on the frontlines while others are in hiding.
Since the day he set out for revenge on the vampire who killed his family, Baltimore’s fight has gotten bigger than he’d ever imagined, but what role will he take as evil finally threatens to consume the world?!
STEPHEN: If you have followed the adventures of Baltimore over the years, you simply MUST pick up this book. It is so good, and eerily reminiscent of current world politics.
BATMAN #16
Writer: Tom King
Artist: David Finch
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I Am Bane” part one! Bane is coming for Batman. Bruce must keep those he loves safe for five days in order to save Gotham Girl once and for all. But Bane will stop at nothing, and no one is safe.
WAYNE: More Batman! More Bane! More!
CYBORG #9
Writer: John Semper Jr.
Artist: Paul Pelletier, Tony Kordos
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “ESCAPE FROM S.T.A.R. LABS”! Vic discovers the origin of the cybernetic foe impersonating his father, but he might not live long enough do anything about it if S.T.A.R. Labs’ deadly security forces get to him first! With his Cyborg technology crippled, Vic must rely on a down-and-out thief to escape one of the most heavily fortified facilities in the DCU.
WAYNE: As a big fan of diversity in comics, this one is a favorite and highly recommended!
DEADLY CLASS #26
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Wesley Craig
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Saya’s secret history is finally revealed as she faces down a horde of assassins, who have come for more than just her life.
CHRIS: The solicitation for this issue is actually for issue 27, but having read this I know it’s fantastic. By the end, Remember had me cheering. He and Craig are great at ripping your heart apart, then putting the pieces back together, only to tear it apart again. After this, I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it will be great.
DEATH OF HAWKMAN #5
Writer: Marc Andreyko
Artist: John Livesay
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As Despero’s insane scheme nears fruition, the casualties rise for both Rann and Thanagar-and to the mind-controlled survivors, only two men are to blame! But Hawkman and Adam Strange are not only intergalactic outlaws-they are perhaps the only two beings in the galaxy who can stop Despero and his army! But first, these two heroes must overcome insurmountable odds to save themselves and the populations of three planets as their mighty forces, led by Hawkwoman, come to exact vengeance upon them…
WAYNE: I still hope the title of this miniseries doesn’t mean the end of my favorite Winged Wonder! I have to know, so I’ll keep buying!
FLINTSTONES #8
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Steve Pugh
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: While Bedrock’s new mayor, Clod the Destroyer, goes to war against the Lizard People, Betty and Wilma decide to take a vacation in the country to visit something called a “farm.” With the women gone, Fred and Barney are left to face the greatest threat of all…their teenagers!
MATTHEW: I’m still not quite past the shock that a comic featuring The Flintstones is providing some of the most trenchant social commentary of the day.
But I like it…
INVINCIBLE #132
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Cory Walker
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Thragg makes a move that will change everything. The cataclysmic events of this issue lead directly into the twelve-part epic “END OF ALL THINGS” starting next issue.
MATTHEW: Sadly, it may be too late for Invincible to go out on top, but still I want to see them go out with a bang. Just don’t murder Terra, guys… Seriously.
STEPHEN: We are on the slow coast to the end of the series, and since I’m a completist, this books is on my pull list this week.
NOVA #1
Writer: Jeff Loveness, Ramon K. Perez
Artist: Ramon K. Perez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • Richard Rider…back from the dead?!
• But HOW?! And WHY?! And what does his return spell for Sam Alexander?
MATTHEW: The mentor/protégé relationship between Rich Rider and Sam Alexander is the thing that finally made me accept Sam. But is it all too good to be true?
SHADE THE CHANGING GIRL #5
Writer: Cecil Castellucci
Artist: Marley Zarcone, Chynna Clugston-Flores
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Which is more powerful? These new human emotions or the madness that brought Shade to Earth? Balancing both is difficult, as the divide between where she is now and where she comes from grows deeper. It’s all about duality as the future and the past are racing to catch up with Shade. She sees strange visions of a possible tomorrow while Megan, the girl whose body she stole, is racing across galaxies to take her life back. Plus, an all-new backup feature: Shade’s favorite TV show, Life With Honey, comes to comics!
CHRIS: Much like Doom Patrol, Shade the Changing Girl is a comic that has to be first on my read pile. It has such a unique voice, story and art that it’s hard not to be drawn to it. While a bit difficult to get into, once you’re along for the ride you can’t stop.
TRANSFORMERS LOST LIGHT #2
Writer: James Roberts
Artist: Jack Lawrence
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Rodimus and Co. find themselves in a dangerous place. Even more dangerous than on a planet that exploded from the inside. That’s already pretty dangerous. But where they are now? Oh boy.
CHRIS: Rodimus and his band of misfits continue their adventures and every issue is something to look forward to. Again, some of the best Transformers comics that have been put out ever and nothing like any Transformers series that has come before. Great stuff.
WILL EISNER SPIRIT CORPSE MAKERS #1
Writer: Francesco Francavilla
Artist: Francesco Francavilla
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A series of unexpected disappearances and deaths hit Central City. Initially these cases seem purely unrelated: no apparent connection between the victims makes it easy for the police to just file them as runaways or natural deaths. But when someone close to Ebony White disappears, The Spirit is on the case!
STEPHEN: To put it simply, this is the one book you must buy this week. Francesco Francavilla doing what he does best? SOLD! SOLD! SOLD! SOLD!
