IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ACTION COMICS #959
Writer: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Tyler Kirkham
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “PATH TO DOOM” Chapter Three: Clark Kent gets caught in the crossfire as Doomsday crashes through the streets of Metropolis! As Lois struggles to keep young Jonathan out of the path of destruction, can former enemies Superman and Lex Luthor stop the monster that once destroyed the city and killed the Man of Steel-or does Luthor have other plans?
JON: Action Comics has been ones of the stronger titles to come out of DC Rebirth and although Patrick Zircher’s art has been on point, Tyler Kirkham is an incredible talent so I’m very excited to see that he will be providing the art on this issue.
ALL NEW X-MEN #11
Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Mark Bagley
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “APOCALYPSE WARS” CONCLUSION! Destined to one day become the next host of the genocidal villain Apocalypse, Evan Sabahnur is determined to change his fate. And now, thousands years in the past, in Ancient Egypt, Evan has allied himself with En Sabah Nur, the boy who will one day become Apocalypse himself! But will the lessons Evan learns in the past seal his fate…or enable him to avert it?
ROB: Evan and Hank stuck in the past has been rather interesting. Getting Hank more in touch with a spiritual/mystical side has made him a more interesting character when seeing his modern counterpart being him only more.
DAREDEVIL #9
Writer: Charles Soule
Artist: Chris Samnee
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: HONG KONG! HUSTLERS!! SPIDER-MAN!!!
ROB: After the mildly heart-wrenching story from the last issue, I’m interested to see what Matt wants to do with the Hand now. Add in Spider-Man in Hong Kong and all sorts of interesting things can happen.
DETECTIVE COMICS #936
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Alvaro Martinez, Raul Fernandez
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “RISE OF THE BATMEN” Chapter Three: In issue #936, Batman is M.I.A., and it’s time for Batwoman to take the reins! But can she control a strike force that’s barely worked together…including unstable wildcard Clayface?
JON: Since Tynion took over on Detective Comics, it’s come back into the forefront as a can’t-miss DC title. I’m a little upset to see that Eddy Barrows isn’t providing the art on this issue but the story has been incredibly strong thus far, so I wouldn’t pass on this.
STEPHEN: Yeah. This book has been very interesting since the beginning, and for now is definitely on my must read list each time it releases.
WAYNE: I think this book is the best of the Rebirth event to date! Looking forward to this week tremendously!
FLASH #2
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE” Chapter Two: In issue #2, The Flash trains novice speedster August Heart to help protect the people of Central City from the Black Hole, a new breed of rogue with a deadly agenda for the Fastest Men Alive.
STEPHEN: Flash has moved back on top as my favorite series, and I really want to see what is behind all of these speedsters showing up. It probably isn’t going to be good…
WAYNE: Mr. Williamson continues to enthrall by taking Barry where no speedster has gone before. A must read!
GUTTER MAGIC TP
Writer: Rich Douek
Artist: Brett Barkley
Publisher: IDW Publishing/Comics Experience
Cover Price: $19.99
SOLICITITATION: It’s magic and mayhem in Manhattan, as Gutter Magic follows the story of Cinder Byrnes, who should be heir to a magical legacy, but can’t cast a spell to save his life. When he finally tracks down a spell that can help him, he must figure out how to cast it before the necromantic crime lord he stole it from tracks him down. An epic, gritty urban fantasy adventure that takes place in an alternate-history New York, where long ago, World War II was fought with magic.
WAYNE: I love magic when it makes sense, so if you like something different, pick up this trade! Great reading!
HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS REBIRTH #1
Writer: Robert Venditti
Artist: Ethan Van Scriver
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Superstar artist Ethan Van Sciver returns to the world of Green Lantern! In the absence of the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro and his fear-inducing Yellow Lantern Corps patrol the universe as its sole protectors-but deep in space, a green light still burns. Harnessing the remainder of his will, Hal Jordan must become a one-man GL Corps to defeat his greatest foe and restore freedom to the cosmos.
JON: The current Green Lanterns title has been a pleasant surprise as far as additions to my pull list but Hal Jordan will always hold a special place in my heart. Throw in the fact that Venditti and Van Scriver comprise the creative team and this is sure to be another homerun.
NEW SUPER-MAN #1
Writer: Gene Luen Yang
Artist: Viktor Bogdanovic
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “MADE IN CHINA” Chapter One: An impulsive act of heroism thrusts an arrogant young man into the limelight of Shanghai as China begins to form its own Justice League of powerful heroes. Rising from the ashes of The Final Days of Superman, award-winning writer Gene Luen Yang and on-the-rise art star Victor Bogdanovic introduce readers to Kong Kenan-the New Super-Man! When the world needed a new hero, China made him!
MATTHEW: I’m 100% on board with this idea, especially if it means China gets their own Justice League. Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.
WACKY RACELAND #2
Writer: Ken Pontac
Artist: Leonardo Manco
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As the Racers roar through the ruins of San Francisco, Dick Dastardly takes a detour that uncovers a shameful secret from his pre-apocalypse days. Dick has a difficult decision: repeat the mistake that shattered his past, or man up and do the right thing? But does Dick even know what the “right thing” means? Meanwhile, Peter, Penelope and the others face a swarm of flesh-eating nanites that threatens to strip them to the bones
MATTHEW: So, there’s a part of me that wants to dislike this, but the first issue was interesting. There’s something about the “everything but the kitchen sink” approach that appeals to me, but I admit I’d feel more confident if this weren’t from the decades-long home of murder, mayhem and needless decapitations. I want to see where it goes, but the ghosts of murdered Teen Titans are haunting me…
WEB WARRIORS #9
Writer: Mike Costa
Artist: David Baldeon
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Web of Life and Destiny is damaged, and even worse – it’s getting TANGLED! How are the Web-Warriors supposed to repair REALITY ITSELF?! Join us for this insane web-hopping romp that features A GIANT SPIDER-MAN ROBOT FROM THE FARTHEST CORNER OF THE MULTIVERSE as a guest star!
ROB: More Spidery hijinks as our team works on two different problems at the same time. The Web of Life coming apart and all of the Electro’s escaping from Battery Park. With more Spiders coming to play, I couldn’t be happier.
THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #21
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Jamie McKelvie
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! But don’t worry, it’s probably a metaphor for the creative process or the Hegelian dialectic or something clever so we’ll still get taken seriously. FIGHT!
MATTHEW: Yeah, yeah, I’ve talked ad nauseam about WicDiv. But this is a book I can’t resist, and this arc is shaping up to be something really different AND really entertaining. And look at that cover!
