ACTION MAN #1
Writer: John Barber
Artist: Paolo Villanelli
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: ACTION MAN IS DEAD-LONG LIVE ACTION MAN! He’s the world’s greatest special agent… until he dies saving the planet, with all the world’s eyes on him. Now his young protégé has to step into the role-whether he’s ready or not!
WAYNE: This book fascinates me, so I’m going to check it out! Great history to the character, will look forward to him as he moves into today’s comics!
DETECTIVE COMICS #935
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Eddy Barrows
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “RISE OF THE BATMEN” chapter two
Batman and team find themselves in the crosshairs as the villain they’ve begun hunting turns the tables on them. Batman and Batwoman have the skills to survive, but do their young teammates? Is this where hero training ends in tragedy?
JON: The last issue of Detective Comics was, in the opinion of many, the best thing to come out of Rebirth so far. The bar has been set pretty high but with Tynion as the scribe, I know I’m in for another great read.
STEPHEN: I really got a kick out of Team Batman (or Team Detective Comics) in the first issue, and having seen a sneak peek of this issue that features some making out and smooching, I’m sold, sold, sold on this series.
WAYNE: Detective Comics has been my favorite of the Rebirth titles so far, not what I expected at all! Looking forward to more!
THE FLASH #1
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION:
“LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE” Chapter One
A new storm brews over Central City and disproves the old adage about lightning never, well…you know. Just as Barry begins to feel overwhelmed fighting crime, a new speedster debuts—but just where did this amazing new friend come from?
STEPHEN: So. Many. Flashes. If you are following the greater Rebirth story – especially the part involving any member of the Flash family, this is a great next chapter in the saga. Plus, a new speedster shows up!
WAYNE: Mr. Williamson is a favorite writer of mine, really looking forward to what he does with the Scarlet Speedster!
JUSTICE LEAGUE #52
Writer: Sam Humphries
Artist: Paul Pelletier
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A TITANS: REBIRTH #1 prelude! Set shortly after the formation of the Justice League, Batman introduces his new partner Robin (Dick Grayson) to the team just as it’s pulled into a deadly assault on Metropolis by mysterious creatures. Outclassed and terrified, the Boy Wonder must use his wits and guile to survive. And in doing so, he catches the attention of a foe that will alter the course of his life forever. This story ties directly into TITANS: REBIRTH #1!
JON: With Justice League #50 leading directly in Rebirth, I figured 51 and 52 would be mostly filler issues so I was surprised to hear that the final issue of this run of Justice League ties into Titans Rebirth. That alone is a major selling point for me – Sam Humphries writing is an added bonus.
NIGHTHAWK #2
Writer: David Walker
Artist: Ramon Villalobos
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With the bodies piling up, Nighthawk hunts the psycho killer stalking the streets, leading to an unlikely alliance. Meanwhile, the racial tension that grips the city is about to explode, leading Nighthawk to make a difficult decision — save the city, or watch it burn.
PARENTAL ADVISORY.
CHRIS: I’m surprised the first issue wasn’t more controversial considering the race wars in Chicago element of the story seems like a sensitive topic at the moment. Maybe it was overshadowed by the whole Captain America thing? Regardless, this is an awesome and violent book. Definitely a hidden gem.
JON: Ever wonder what it’d be like if Batman lived in the Marvel Universe, dressed like a bird and killed people? If you have, this book is definitely for you. This book is action-packed and tackles major social issues at the same time, with just the right amount of blood and gore.
PRETTY DEADLY #10
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: Emma Rios
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: The second arc concludes with the death of Sarah.
MATTHEW: This is a beautiful book with a truly affecting story, totally worth the price of admission.
SHE WOLF #1
Writer: Rich Tommaso
Artist: Rich Tommaso
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SHE WOLF is a surreal exploration in horror as the story follows a teenage girl who believes she’s been bitten by a savage werewolf. Soon after she begins to experience feverish nightmares that seamlessly bleed into her everyday reality.
CHRIS: I don’t know what it is about this one but something has me very curious about it. I’m not into werewolves all that much but this seems like something more complex than that. Also, that cover is weirdly haunting.
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ADAPTATION #1
Writer: Chuck Wendig
Artist: Luke Ross
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: It’s true-all of it! The biggest movie of the year jumps from the big screen to the comic book page! It’s been three decades since the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star and toppled the Galactic Empire…but now, on the remote planet of Jakku…there is a stirring in the Force. A young scavenger named Rey…a deserting stormtrooper named Finn…an ace pilot name Poe…and a dark apprentice named Kylo Ren…Their lives are about to collide as the awakening begins. Written by Chuck Wendig (STAR WARS: AFTERMATH) and drawn by Luke Ross (HERCULES), take us on our first steps back into the Saga of a lifetime!
MATTHEW: Gotta admire their commitment to avoiding spoilers…
TRANSFORMERS MORE THAN MEETS EYE #54
Writer: James Roberts
Artist: Alex Milne
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: MASSACRE! The battle between the DECEPTICON Justice Division and MEGATRON’s AUTOBOTS reaches its nerve-shredding climax. Pray for your favorites-because not everyone makes it out of this issue alive.
CHRIS: I’ve read this already and man is it an amazing issue! All the seeds that James Roberts has planted over the years and numerous issues are starting to see light. This issue is packed with action and some great moments from Chromedome and Megatron. Seriously some of the best Transformers stories I’ve read in years.
WONDER WOMAN #1
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Liam Sharp
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE LIES” chapter one: Why has the lasso of truth stopped working for the Amazon Princess? Start down the rabbit hole as dark secrets from Wonder Woman’s past unravel her present!
MATTHEW: I was really impressed by the Rebirth #1 issue, and now I want to see what the real story behind Wonder Woman’s past is. The new costume doesn’t hurt, either…
