IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #10
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The 13th sign of the Zodiac is THE SPIDER?!?!?! Scorpio is on the verge of controlling the future and Spider-Man’s fight will take him on both sides of the English Channel. But when Scorpio compromises Parker Industries, what will this mean for Peter moving forward?!
ROB: Dan Slott’s globe-trotting Spider-Man has been a great read so far, and having the first real major villain be a threat within his own company makes for a great read. I just hope this doesn’t hurt the status quo too much, for a change, as International Spider-Man seems so much more interesting for Peter at this point.
STEPHEN: I’ve slowly been getting back into Spider-Man, and Dan Slott definitely knows how to tell a story, so I’m confident that this is a book that you’ll enjoy, too.
THE AUTUMNLANDS #10
Writer: Kurt Busiek
Artist: Benjamin Dewey
Publisher: Image
Cover Price: 2.99
SOLICITATION: Thing have gotten very bad, up the mountain. Very bad.
MATTHEW: This book is one that consistently makes for a quality read, and it’s not like anything else on the stands. Check it out, seriously…
RODRIGO: Month to month Autumnlands is definitely my favorite comic about puppies and kittens being sad.
C3PO #1
Writer: James Robinson
Artist: Tony Harris
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Follow everyone’s favorite protocol droid as he Journeys to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in this special one-shot leading up to his appearance in the film! Just how did Threepio get a red arm, anyway? Find out here as the blockbuster creative team of James Robinson and Tony Harris of DC’s Starman reunite for the first time in nearly two decades! You may be fluent in over six million forms of communication…but this book is a must have in any language!
MATTHEW: I sincerely hope this is all a big shaggy dog story that ends with a nonsensical “And that’s why the song is called Alice’s Restaurant” sort of reveal. Either way, that damn arm has me wondering…
HELLBOY IN MEXICO TPB
Writer: Mike Mignola
Artist: Mike Mignola, Richard Corben, Mick McMahon, Fabio Moon, Gabriel Ba
Publisher: Dark Horse
Cover Price: 19.99
SOLICITATION: In 1956, Hellboy caravans across Mexico—vampire hunting withluchadores, finding the Aztec gods, fighting evil turkeys and Frankenstein’s monster, and drinking way too much tequila, in the strangest collection of his adventures yet.
Collects “Hellboy versus the Aztec Mummy,” “Hellboy Gets Married,” and “The Coffin Man 2: The Rematch” from Dark Horse Presents, “The Coffin Man” from Hellboy 20th Anniversary Sampler, Hellboy in Mexico, and Hellboy: House of the Living Dead.
RODRIGO: Hellboy in Mexico might as well be called “That trade we made for Rodrigo.”
INVASION TPB
Writer: Keith Giffen/Bill Mantlo
Artist: Todd McFarlane & Various
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $19.99
SOLICITATION: The massive 3-issue miniseries from 1988 is available again in this new edition! In this universe-spanning saga, the deadly but emotionless Dominators have come to Earth to wipe out the threat posed by metahumans. But what is the real reason for their attack?
MATTHEW: 1988 was a good year for comics, one very much like the current climate: Coming off a big crossover schmageggi, DC was regrouping with new takes on old favorites and disused characters in the forefront. It’s a crossover that feels like it makes sense, and actually had repercussions for the heroes. Highly recommended!
STEPHEN: This was the first major company crossover event that I took part in way back in the day, and I loved every minute of it. Pick up this trade, and you’ll see why the Dominators are a force to be feared.
MONSTRESS #5
Writer: Marjorie Liu
Artist: Sana Takeda
Cover Price: 3.99
SOLICITATION: Maika struggles with the monster inside.
RODRIGO: I’ve been meaning to get into Monstress, I’ll try to pick up the first four and then jump in here.
SPIDER-GWEN #7
Writer: Jason Latour
Artist: Bengal
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SPIDER-WOMEN, PART 2! Trapped in Earth-65, Spider-Gwen, Jessica Drew and Spider-Woman search for a way to get Jessica home. Along the way, Jessica gets a tour of Gwen’s life and meets THE MARY JANES!
ROB: Part Two of Spider-Women! While I wasn’t sold on the characterization of Silk in the first issue, I’m still looking forward to where this story goes from here. And with a very Spider-Heavy week this is the one I’m most looking forward to.
WEB WARRIORS #6
Writer: Mike Costa
Artist: David Baldeon
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With the threat of the ELECTROVERSE sated (for now), what’s an average day in the life of an interdimensional Spider-Man or Spider-Woman really like? Could it involve… MURDER?!
ROB: After the way last issue left off, this title has become a bit more intense. Though the deaths and/or losses of certain heroes in this book don’t really affect the regular Marvel Univers as a whole, it’s impact is still one that actually leaves weight.
