Sad new for fans of Disney’s Gravity Fall. Series creator Alex Hirsch has announced he is ending the popular series at the end of season two.
Hirsch took to his Tumblr page this weekend and broke the news to fans.
The first thing to know is that the show isn’t being cancelled- it’s being finished. This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to payoff.
Its interesting that Hirsch always planned for the show to end, it’s just too bad we didn’t learn about it sooner. Today sees the penultimate episode “Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality” hit the airwaves, then sometime in 2016 we will get a one hour finale, titled Weirdmageddon III.
It has been noted in many places that Gravity Falls is one of Disney’s most popular shows, so it really surprises me that Hirsch is bringing it to a close – perhaps it is a form of denial on my part.
Why did we wait so long to announce that this was the last season? The truth is, it wasn’t up to me. Before we started Season 2, my writers and I decided that this season would be the last. I wanted to announce this to the world at large then, but I was restricted from doing so, mainly because I think a lot of people were hoping I’d change my mind.
While it may be a downer that the series is ending very soon, the plus side is fans were given nearly 40 episodes of quality storytelling about the Pines family and their weird adventures in Gravity Falls. The Major Spoilers HQ owns all the episodes, so when we want to binge watch the series from beginning to end, look for all the hints and clues dropped and hidden throughout, we can do it whenever we want.

While I think it is sad that this series is ending so soon, I also think this is one of the best things they can do. Honestly, how many series have overstayed their welcome and were cancelled without a satisfying conclusion? Or how many ended on cliffhangers and were never resolved? How many stayed on so long that they became poor imitations of their original selves? I do think the show could have gone a few more seasons and still stayed fresh and interesting, but I’m thrilled they are ending it on their own terms and with a definitive ending.
Such a good show, glad it’s not being rushed like Avatr / Kora.
