Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: A League Of Your Own Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonOctober 30, 201511 Comments1 Min Read

Dating back to 1961, the Justice League has been at the forefront of superheroic shenanigans in the multiverse, in various and sundry incarnations (sometimes three or four at a time.)  The list of members is longer than my graduating class, and includes such luminaries as Superman, Jay Garrick and some schmuck in a bat-suit.  (Technically, several schmucks in several bat-suits, but why quibble?)  Their example served as the template for The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, even the Impossibles, but everyone has their own ideas of what makes the perfect League, which leads us to today’s unifying query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) will allow you seven characters from anywhere in fiction, but cautions Faithful Spoilerites to remember balance in all things, asking: Who would you recruit for your own personal Justice League?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Nightwing as leader, Oracle as the brains, Flash (Wally West) as the speedster, Blue Beetle (either one) and Booster Gold as the buddy cops, Superman because I love that guy, and Hawkgirl because she’s badass. I’d also rotate the Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Red Tornado and Vixen in and out with Superman for flavour and pizazz and would keep Wildcat (Ted Grant) in the background as mentor and trainer.
That’s a really cool Justice League. I would read the heck out of that.

As a fan of the various incarnations of the League for a very long time, I’ve had my ideal magnificent seven rotate for years, as players come and go. On a DC-centric team, I’m currently leaning towards –

      Martian Manhunter – Leader/Chris/Kirk
      Hawkgirl (Shiera Hall <- that's not a typo) – Lancer/Vin/McCoy
      Supergirl (Linda Danvers/Matrix) – Big Guy/Britt/Spock
      Red Robin – Smart Guy/Harry/Uhura
      Elongated Man – Old Guy/Lee/Scotty
Flash (Wally West) – Young Guy/Chico/Chekov
Blue Bettle (Ted Kord) – Funny Guy/Bernardo/Sulu

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern (any), Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, But I´m a fan of large rosters, so we would have rotation but still keeping team size of required seven. Alternate characters would be: Captain Atom, Hawkman, Captain Marvel (Shazam), Green Arrow, Vixen, Hawkgirl and Plastic Man.

I could maybe include more young people like Stargirl, but I really prefer them in legacy team like Justice Society.

      Power Girl (70’s Era)
      Captain Atom (Charlton Era)
      GeoForce (80’s)
      Mr. Terrific (Modern Michael Holt)
      Metamorpho
Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Bronze Era) Weakness to Yellow.
      Hourman

    5. Kirby on October 30, 2015 4:04 pm

Superman (Leader, because otherwise this will be too JLI heavy) (If editorial said I couldn’t use him then Mr. Terriffic)
      Elongated Man
      Mister Miracle
      Big Barda
      Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)
      Wildfire
      Enchantress
      Atom (Ryan Choi)

Come on people, anywhere in fiction and we stick to DC characters? Let me try to get out of the comics box.

Going off the idea that the Justice League was/is/should be a conglomeration of all the greatest heroes available::

The Doctor – the alien that can do just about anything
James Bond – the pinnacle of human determination
Buffy Summers – kicking hero of myth
Chuck Bartowski – science-y guy jolted into a heroic life
John Crichton – human pilot with intergalactic adventuring credentials
      Katniss Everdeen – system-bucking archer
Harry Potter – hero out of his depth

    7. AmFan15 on October 31, 2015 3:14 am

      – Captain America (Steve Rogers) – The leader and the heart of the group, as well as a combat master with an indestructible shield. Will be able to command, unify, and inspire the team.
      – The Doctor (Doctor Who) – Time traveler who has been to countless worlds, times, and galaxies. Will handle intergalactic, cosmic, and time travelling threats.
      – Doctor Strange (Steven Strange) – Master of the mystic arts. Will handle supernatural and interdimensional foes.
      – Martian Manhunter ( J’onn J’onzz) – Alien with ridiculous amounts of power: Shape shifting, flight, super-strength, vast mental and visual powers. Can link the team telepathically, so they can always stay in contact.
      – Spider-Man (Peter Parker) – Someone to bring a sense of humor to the group, but who knows how to buckle down when he needs to. (Also he’s my favorite…it wouldn’t be my list without him!)
      – Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) – One of the most powerful Lanterns, due to his creativity, artistic nature, and heroism. Also, I’ve always wanted to see him team up with Spider-Man. They should be great together.
      – Mr Fantastic (Reed Richards) / Iron Man (Tony Stark) – The team needs a tech guy, and either one will fit as the inventor of the group…and imagine what they could do with The Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver!

    8. Slappy on October 31, 2015 7:14 am

      Aquaman – Leader
      GL – Kyle Rayner
      Flash – Wally West
      Hawkman
      Mister Miracle
      Big Barda
      Black Canary
      Green Arrow

    9. Gehrigan on October 31, 2015 7:31 am

Flash – Barry Allen – straight arrow with a heart of gold.
Lois Lane – determined, can ferret out information from any source, not intimidated by the most powerful of beings.
Gandalf – Knowledgeable on magic, knows when to let the other heroes act. Immortal.
Jon Snow – a natural leader with a noble heart.
Elijah Snow – cynical, powerful, excellent resources.
Miracleman – powerhouse of the team.
Firestorm – energy manipulator, enthusiasm, stating power

    10. bob on October 31, 2015 8:10 am

      Martian Manhunter
      Batman
      Captain Atom
      Guy Gardner
      Booster Gold
      Blue Beetle
(All the above from the Ba ha ha JLI)
      Shazam!
      Red Tornado
      Firestorm
THIS would be a powerful and FUN team.

    11. Doug Romshe on October 31, 2015 11:46 pm

      So many good possibilities…

      Yoda (Leader, Force Manipulation)
      Hiro Nakamura (Time Manipulation)
      Daenerys Targaryen (Because Dragons)
Martian Manhunter (A Boatload of Powers and an Actual Member of the JL)
      Samantha Stephens (Bewitched, Magic)
Sandman of the Endless (Dream Manipulation)
Dr. Light (Mega Man, to Build an Army of Robot Cannon Fodder)
