I hope people reading the comments have seen the movie but just in case…
—SPOILERS AHEAD—
I watched this last weekend. I loved it. A couple parts of the story didn’t feel cohesive, or fully fleshed out, but I overall enjoyed the film. It is beautifully shot, with a lot of absolutely stunning images of the “American West”. Although, I believe it was shot in New Zealand.
Early on in the film, it was apparent that Jay and Rose’s love was not mutual, which I thought brought an interesting sense of futurism to the young man’s journey. My favorite scene is the trading post scene, I don’t know if I can articulate why.
On Filmspotting, a different film podcast, they talked about how the movie is very much about the dangers of naïveté and I think I agree with that. There are a lot of scenes that reflect that, even the trading post scene that I mentioned.
There definitely is a sense that Jay is totally naive in his quest, but there is also a great sense of doom for every character that turns this into a great tragedy flick.
Also, I hope futilism is a word… But I mean it makes his journey feel futile. :P
