During the Disney shareholders meeting, the company revealed a few details regarding upcoming Star Wars movies.
First up it is finally confirmed that Rian Johnson is writing and directing Star Wars: Episode VIII, and is scheduled to arrive May 26, 2017. For those keeping score, that’s roughly 17 months after Episode VII.
We did know that there would be solo movies that would run in between the main Star Wars flicks and we knew Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) would be taking on the first one. During the meeting we learned that the title of the first solo movie would be called Rogue One, and will star Felicity Jones. According to Variety, there is speculation that Rogue One would be a story set in the early days focusing on Princess Leia and Han Solo. If that is the case, Felicity Jones sure does look a lot like Princess Leia…
Rogue One is written by Chris Weitz, based on an idea by John Knoll, and will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Knoll, Tony To, and John Schwartz. The movie is scheduled to arrive on December 16, 2016.
Pretty exciting news for Star Wars fans, and with everyone chomping at the bit for The Force Awakens, I’m sure many of you are now running around like a three year old on a sugar rush.

That title sounds promising. For too long, focus of Star Wars has been guys in bathrobes and not enough in ships and fighters blasting each other.
This is one of the reasons the Expanded Universe was so appealing to me. It had stories that stepped away from the Jedi/Sith story and focused on smugglers, pirates, soldiers. petty criminals and normal folks among other things. I was really hoping the spinoff movies would do something like that, and this seems to be pointing in that direction.
Now if they would just announce that they were going to make a movie focusing on a crime syndicate or a heist movie, I’d be in heaven.
