IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!
But what to read?
Fortunately, the Major Spoilers Staff have comic book recommendations for you!
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #13
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Olivier Coipel
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SPIDER-VERSE PART 5 – THE FINAL BATTLE BEGINS HERE! • EVERY SPIDER-MAN EVER MUST FIGHT AND NO SPIDER IS SAFE!
GEORGE: I was not looking forward to Spider-Verse, but Dan Slott has taken so many ideas that looked dubious at first glance and made gold. He keeps topping himself with each different Spider-Men. Peter Porker! Supaidaman (and Leopardon)! And, naturally, Spider-Gwen.
ROB: All things Spider-Verse have been awesome, and we have no shortage of Spiders this week, so I’ll point you to the primary while also telling you to check out everything else while you’re at it.
AUTUMNLANDS: TOOTH & CLAW #3
Writer: Kurt Busiek
Artist: Benjamin Dewey
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Enter: Goodfoot the Sly. Is she here to help the wizards…or herself? [Hint: herself.]
GEORGE: The series formerly known as Autumnlands is a beautifully-drawn, wonderfully-realized fantasy world. This is peak Kurt Busiek, people, and you should be reading it.
JASON: Kurt Busiek proves himself again as one the best cmic book writers out there with this series! One part fantasy and one part animals as humans, this book has everything you need if you are looking for a riveting fantasy read!
MATTHEW: I can’t believe I missed the title change between #1 and #2! Still, I’m caught up now, and I want to know more about the strange anthropomorphic animal people of Busiek & Dewey’s strange new world… This is good comics.
BATMAN AND ROBIN #38
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Mick Gray, Patrick Gleason
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The team of Batman and Robin are together again! But what is the new dynamic for this crimefighting duo now that Damian has super powers of his own?
JASON: Damian’s back and he has superpowers! One of the best Bat books out there brings back one of my favorite Robins, and twists the dynamic duo relationship. It’ll be interesting to see how Batman adapts to working with a superhuman son as his partner.
WAYNE: I’m glad Damian is back and that Tomasi and company are exploring new ground in the father/son relationship of Bruce and Damian. This has consistently been one of my very favorite Bat-family books, so I’m looking forward to more of the same!
EPOCHALYPSE #3
Writer: Jonathan Hennessey
Artist: Shane Davis
Publisher: Legendary Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As the fragile world hangs together by tenuous threads, we meet the beautiful Ramona, a political activist with a curious connection to our hero. Meanwhile, Officer Johannes and his partners track down the traces of black market medicine man “Dr. Tomorrow,” leading them one step closer to the elusive outlaw “The Salesman.” Venturing into an abandoned underground hospital, they make a chilling discovery – they’re not alone! Will Johannes survive this brush with death long enough to reveal the master plans of Dr. Tomorrow?
WAYNE: Science fiction always likes to ask, “What if?” This comic asks, “What if advanced technology were no longer in the hands of everyday people?” It’s a fascinating look into a possible future. Being a sci-fi guy, I love this kind of book. If you like the same kind of reading, don’t miss it!
GALAXY QUEST JOURNEY CONTINUES #1 of 4
Writer: Erik Burnham
Artist: Nacho Arranz
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Once upon a time, a troupe of has-been actors that starred on an old sci-fi show were enlisted by an alien race to save them from an intergalactic tyrant. Despite being way out of their depth, the cast somehow managed to save the aliens and stay alive … but their actions in outer space may have had dire consequences for another world. Join us this January as the cast of Galaxy Quest returns for another bombastic journey into space!
WAYNE: This isn’t the first time that GQ has come back in the comics! Whether it’s watching the wonderful film or reading books based on it, this Trek-like franchise is entertaining and engaging, pardon the pun. If you haven’t seen the movie, go watch it! If you have, don’t miss this excellent comic based on it!
GI JOE SNAKE EYES AGENT OF COBRA #1 (OF 5)
Writer: Mike Costa
Artist: Paolo Villanelli
Publisher: IDW PUBLISHING
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: DESTRO, one of COBRA’s top operatives, has been captured. As the metal masked maverick gets transferred to a new prison, a prison break is instigated by none other than… SNAKE EYES! With DESTRO free and SNAKE EYES under COBRA’s control, a mission that will rock the world of G.I. JOE begins!
RODRIGO: I always thought it was weird that the ninja on the non-cobra side had “snake” in his name. Clearly IDW has finally corrected this grievous oversight.
INTERSECT #3
Writer: Ray Fawkes
Artist: Ray Fawkes
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: The fearsome creature known as “Lucky” delivers one of our travellers to perdition. The Lady of Birds takes to the wheeling skies. The complex riddle of INTERSECT turns fearsome and discordant…is this the final shape of the new world?
GEORGE: A complex riddle indeed. The writing in Intersect is as hazy and dream-like as the art. It’s a crazy ambitious book, and I still haven’t totally figured out what’s going on, but it’s so different from anything else on the stands that I love it.
THE KITCHEN #3
Writer: Ollie Masters
Artist: Ming Doyle
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Kath and Raven continue to solidify their bloody hold over the rackets of Hell’s Kitchen, and we get a glimpse into their childhood – and what it was like being rival siblings of the toughest Irish gangster in New York.
RODRIGO: Crime is not really my thing, but you can’t go wrong with Ming Doyle’s art. So I guess I’m still reading this.
THE LEGEND OF KORRA: THE ART OF THE ANIMATED SERIES–BOOK THREE: CHANGE HC
Writer: Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko, Joaquim Dos Santos
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $34.99
SOLICITATION: Go behind the scenes of the third season of the Legend of Korraanimated TV series—created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko—the smash-hit sequel to their blockbuster show Avatar: The Last Airbender!
Discover amazing never-before-seen artwork created during the development of The Legend of Korra Book Three. Detailed captions throughout this impressive art book give you an in-depth, revealing tour of the creative process that went into creating this beloved series.
RODRIGO: I still need to pick up the one for season two. You’re all bad friends for not getting it for me. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that, I just get a little irritable when an art book I want goes on the market.
STEPHEN: The first volume blew me away with the gorgeous art, and having seen what this volume holds (listen to my review on the Major Spoilers Podcast), I want a physical copy in my hands.
LUMBERJANES #10
Writer: Noelle Stevenson, Shannon Watters
Artist: Carolyn Nowak
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It’s a free day at Lumberjanes camp, and April is…bored out of her skull. With nothing to fight, April, Jo, and Ripley set themselves to earning all the badges they can that don’t involve monsters or the supernatural, which is surprisingly hard! Meanwhile, when Mal and Molly sneak off to have a picnic, they accidentally stumble into something more than they ever bargained for…
MATTHEW: All-ages doesn’t have to mean for kids, and comics doesn’t have to mean for boys. Here’s a book that puts the lie to BOTH these presumptions with verve, energy and cleverness. You should really be reading this one…
SAMURAI JACK #16
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Sergio Quijada
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A prophet calling himself the “Master of Time” hides within a compound crawling with untold monsters and deadly traps. Jack the Samurai will need to become Jack the Infiltrator if he hopes to gain an audience with the mysterious master.
ROB: After recovering his broken sword, Jack is much better than ever, and this looks to be a new story arc. Should be fun to see Jack the sneak for awhile.
TMNT ONGOING #42
Writer: Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman
Artist: Cory Smith
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Part 2 of “Attack on Technodrome!” An unusual alliance makes its first moves as Fugitoid, Baxter, and Krang aim to outwit each other. The twists and turns are just beginning as the Technodrome is mere moments away from activation!
ROB: The end of last issue was quite the surprise, and I genuinely look forward to how this is going to affect the different teams involved.
THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #7
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Jamie McKelvie
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Last year, before The Recurrence, fans gathered from their lonely worlds at RAGNAROCK to wonder whether the gods were really about to return or not. Now, as the next RAGNAROCK approaches, everyone knows things are different. What’s more, there are two gods still to emerge. Will anyone there get “lucky?” Look at us whistle, shuffle feet, and avoid eye contact.
MATTHEW: Yes. Go buy this. It is well-written, well-drawn, self-aware and cool…
