This is the first official look at Japan’s live-action adaptation of The Next Generation: Patlabor. There are a pair of Mechs from the movie, which is part of the Japanese police force used to combat giant robot crime. The movie itself is based off a manga and anime series. Take the jump for the pics and some more information.
The project was announced at the Taiwan International Comic Exposition on Thursday. Do you want to know something really cool about the movie? It’s being directed by Mamoru Oshii, the man behind Ghost in the Shell. It’s no surprise that he’s directing the film though as he’s been involved with the franchise since the mid-80s.
The story takes place in what was, at the time of release, the near future of 1998-2002. Robots called “Labors” are employed in heavy construction work. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police has its own fleet of Patlabor robotic police officers to combat crimes and deal with accidents involving Labors. It’s a combination of office comedy and police drama.

Can’t wait for this!
Wow casting is being the important thing here i think. The characters in the animated movies were brilliant and each very likeable, somehow very very grounded and well… realistic.
