SDCC’13: Geoff Johns wants to see an Aquaman movie

Zach WoolfBy Zach WoolfJuly 20, 20134 Comments2 Mins Read

In an interview with MTV yesterday, Geoff Johns was asked to share his thoughts on the possibility of an Aquaman movie and how he would do it. His answer after the jump.

I’d love to see an Aquaman movie. I think he’s a terrific character. People know him. The world is amazing. Working with Ivan Reis on ‘Aquaman’ and later Paul Pelletier, the visuals are exciting. The characters are exciting. There are creatures. Ninety percent of the oceans have never been seen by human eyes. Most of our threats come from space, but I also think that having threats come from the deep sea would be great to see.

Aquaman was a character that only served for talking to fish jokes, but since the beginning of the New 52 Johns has been trying to change that persona and has created a title that fans have been enjoying.

But simply because fans are enjoying a comic book character does not mean that will have a feature film created about them. I wouldn’t expect to see Aquaman hit the screen until a Justice League movie is announced, and who knows if that will be happening anytime soon.

Would you want to see an Aquaman movie done in the current style of Geoff’s run? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.

Aquaman? Really? Didn’t Disney already do that movie? Under da sea… Under da sea… They already botched GL, and let us never speak of the Flash TV show from the 70s ever again. But, hey, if DC and WB has a couple extra million dollars laying around they don’t know what to do with, they could just give it to me and save themselves a lot of work. I’d sure I’d enjoy that lots better than any movie they come up with. We’re talking Aquaman here. You don’t see Marvel rushing to get a Namor movie into the works, do you? That should tell the folks at WB something. There is a reason that Aquaman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, the Marsian Manhunter, etc. aren’t first stringers. Theres a reason they often aren’t able to sustain their own books for long periods of time. They. Aren’t. That. Interesting. Name one really interesting Aquaman villain. Name one memorial Aquaman story? The only one I can think of is the one where the paranas ate Aquaman’s hand. I’d rather see more Batman or Superman movies, to be perfectly frank about it. If I “wanted to see the world’s oceans” I’d watch reruns of Jacques Cousteau or Sea Hunt.

        Piranhas.

And I don’t know that the argument “I don’t read this book!” and “I can’t name one good story!” really co-exist all that well, do you?

The top 2 Aquaman villains are Black Manta and Ocean Master… Both equally interesting characters… Black Manta did kill Aquaman’s son, after all, and Ocean Master is Aquaman’s half brother… You know… For those that don’t read the books… Interesting stories that could be told from Aquaman include Time & Tide, the Sub-Diego story line, heck pretty much any story from either Peter David or Geoff Johns should work as those are probably 2 of the better known writers on the series… You could do a story where Aquaman is king, married, and a father and loses it all (as he did back in the 70’s…).

And, for future arguments where you want to say The Flash tv series is awful, it’s from the 90’s, shortly after Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie came out… And it’s not awful at all… Maybe slightly dated, but it is over 20 years old now….
