[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/majorspoilers/msp492.mp3[/podcast]Pi, also titled π,is a 1998 American surrealist psychological thriller film written and directed by Darren Aronofsky. It is Aronofsky’s directorial debut, and earned him the Directing Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and the Gotham Open Palm Award. The title refers to the mathematical constant pi.[nb 2]Like most of Aronofsky’s films, Pi centers on a protagonist whose obsessive pursuit of ideas leads to severely self-destructive behavior.

Something you guys didn’t really hit on is Max’s interactions with his mentor Sol (Mark Margolis). Specifically, their use of the ancient board game Go to illustrate some of the theories about his number work… How there are so many possible games of games of Go that no two are ever alike, but eventually as the game progresses there are fewer and fewer possible options so you can start to predict the endgame. A really basic visual metaphor for their attempt to distill order from chaos.
I love playing Go, and this is one of the only Western movies that features it (another being A Beautiful Mind). You can read the Go wiki entry on the game here:

Also, more people should play Go, because it’s awesome.
Talking about commentaries, reminds me of your old commentaries on Cowboy Bebop, which I kinda wanted more of.
In any case I like the commentary on FLCL, because it is so dense and there is so much going on behind the scenes in that show.
