Occasionally in my life, I’ve had a very bad first impression of certain bits of pop culture that was as knee-jerk as it is powerful. Notably, I was turned off by the first issue of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Sandman,’ and didn’t return to the series for several years. (In my defense, #1 is atypical of the series and certain not the best single issue.) I also had an immediate dislike of The Venture Brothers, based on the episode where they killed Race Bannon, one of my childhood heroes. I have since changed my views vehemently, and now believe that the series is a perfect example of meta-commentary at it’s very finest, featuring one of my favorite cartoon villains in Doctor Mrs. The Monarch. I also have a slight crush on her, despite the character’s vocal presence being more Harvey Fierstein than Jackie O, something which Critical Hit’s own Rob has been heard to mock me mercilessly…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) belongs in here, it just has a deep voice, asking:
Who is YOUR most embarrassing pop culture crush?

Embarassing? Cyclone from the JSA, while intelligent and attractive in all that, I think it would quickly devolve into manic-pixie dream girl.
The Red-Headed Girl from Peanuts that Charlie Brown has a crush on. It’s the only thing I can really think of.
Embarrassing, as I can’t remember ever really -seeing- her.
Catman from Secret Six. I love a guy who’s strategically scruffy.
(And I understand about Venture Brothers – I am stll torn on it because it’s a damn fine show but it has absolutely ruined any hopes of a JQ revival.)
Besides Jasmine and Umeko from Dekaranger because only people from the internet and cons know who they are?
