Earlier this week, BOOM! Studios announced its all new iPad application for purchasing and viewing the company’s digital comics. While the title selection is relatively small right now, the interest in the application was enough to drive the app to the number seven position just behind Marvel in the Free Book App category of the iTunes App store.
If BOOM! has any hope of surpassing the competition, the company is going to need to do two things; increase the number of titles and issues available, and really consider day and date release. The first hurdle is already being worked on as the company told me that they plan on having their entire backlist of titles available to consumers by the end of the 2010 summer season.
“BOOM! Studios is aggressively committed to getting our comics and graphic novels into the hands of fans everywhere,” said BOOM! Studios Marketing Director Chip Mosher. “By offering our comics digitally we’ve made it easier than ever for new and old fans alike to access our growing library of acclaimed comics. Stay tuned! This is just the start of our digital roll out with much more to come!”
The second issue of Day and Date is going to be more of a challenge, as it appears most publishers are taking the wait and see approach to Day and Date, and it looks like it will hinge on Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man stunt it will be pulling in a few weeks.
For those wondering if the company announcement will include Disney titles, we’ve been told it does not, as Disney has its own comic book app.
