Platinum Studios and Valhalla Motion Pictures have hired Ryuhei Kitamura to direct the movie adaptation of Top Cow Productions’ Magdalena property. The Magdelena character, which first appeared in 1998, is a descendant of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. She has the ability to see into the human heart to give people a choice to redeem their sins. Holly Brix has been tapped to write the screenplay. via Variety

Liquid Comics, the salvaged part of the defunct Virgin Comics company, has announced it has signed a deal with FreemantleMedia Enterprises to develop media projects based on the company’s comic book properties. The first is “Ani-Max,” about a boy who can absorb the abilities and physical characteristics of any animal he touches. It will be developed as an animated TV show. Lloyd Levin, the producer behind Watchmen, has nabbed the rights to Terry Moore’s Echo comic book series. “Echo” tells the story of a photographer who is preoccupied with her personal problems until she gets doused by liquid metal from a military experiment gone awry. She discovers she can now harness the power of a nuclear bomb, and soon the military wants its walking weapon. Fox 2000 has announced it has cast Zachary Gordon in the role of Greg Heffley in the movie adaptation of Diary of a Whimpy Kid. The “Wimpy Kid” stories were told in a diary and cartoon format; more than 16 million copies are in print. Jeff Filgo & Jackie Filgo and Jeff Judah & Gabe Sachs wrote the screenplay. Chloe Moretz is in talks for the female lead, while Rachel Harris has been cast as Gordon’s mother. via THR
Morgan Spurlock and Dark Horse Entertainment are teaming up to create a comic book based on Spurlock’s Super-Size Me documentary from a few years ago. The book, “Supersized: Strange Tales From a Fast Food Culture,” will feature bizarre stories about the U.S.’s obsession with fast food that weren’t seen in the film while still hoping to make a point about health and nutrition. Spurlock will write the stories, with a mix of established and up-and-coming artists scripting and drawing the book. It is set for publication in the spring. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are getting a movie franchise relaunch, and producers have hired John Fusco to write the script. The live action movie does not have a director, cast, or studio attached to the project just yet, but Lightbox Prod. 4Kids Entertainment is handling all the licensing for the turtles.
