Previously in Trial of Magneto: Scarlet Witch was killed at the Hellfire Gala and all evidence pointed to Magneto. This led to a conflict between Magneto verses the mutants of Krakoa and the Avengers. Luckily, Magneto was able to resurrect the Scarlet Witch and she came just in time to face three Kaiju monsters that were attacking the island. Now that the threat has ended everyone looks to the Scarlet Witch to ask, who killed her?
THE SCRAPEGOAT
The Trial of Magneto #5 starts will Scarlet Witch answering the most prominent question, Toad killed her. The Quiet Council set up a trial and he admitted to the murder and was sentenced to exile. However, there is more to the story. We are given a flashback, a conversation between Scarlet Witch and Magneto during the day of the Hellfire Gala. She planned her own murder and ultimately killed herself to help the resurrection process, she then tasked her father to plant the evidence against Toad. In the present, Scarlet Witch gathers Polaris, Legion, and Proteus to help her with a spell. All three represent three children to important people in Krakoa. However, the spell doesn’t work, and Scarlet Witch replaces Polaris as a child representing Magneto. This spell allows resurrection of mutants who were thought lost. People who weren’t scanned by Cerebro and therefore fell within the cracks. Scarlet Witch turned from the Pretender to the Redeemer!
REDEMPTION ARC?
There is a lot going on in The Trial of Magento #5. I enjoyed the return back to the murder mystery feel that the series initially introduced. However, the message is confusing. It almost looks like the entire series was there to redeem Scarlet Witch’s public perception to the mutants of Krakoa. To turn her back into an ally after some of her earlier actions. But why? Why is that an important plot line? Certainly, it supplied a cool miniseries, but I wonder the implications that it is trying to set up. In a way, the latest run of X-Men stuff has been all over the place. They are introducing themes that seem to be counterintuitive to one another. Way of X questioned the resurrection process while this one seems to praise it. Perhaps, the next few story arcs will make this clearer and give Justice for Toad!
That being said, this was a solid conclusion to a comic book. And it had a few very crucial moments. Watching Magneto grieve was an amazing moment and watching the commentary from the Avengers about Krakoa law was engaging. It is always nice when a comic title slows down to explore the smaller moments rather than focusing only on the large ones.
BOTTOM LINE: A SOLID CONCLUSION
Trial of Magneto #5 brought us back to the themes and promises that the first two issues gave us. We returned to the murder mystery and the exploration of grief that engaged me in the first place. While I don’t know the implications of the comic book, I am excited to see what comes next. This is a 4 out of 5 stars for the excellent writing.
