Previously in Strange Academy: Strange Academy is a place where sorcerers from all already the realm come to learn under Doctor Stephen Strange. Recently, Calvin has lost his ability to use magic and Zoe is now a zombie. Neither is great for being at a magic school!
TOO FAR AHEAD
Strange Academy #14 begins with Doctor Voodoo teaching the kids about the perils of time travel and how to interact with people if they find themselves in the future or past. He then allows his students to practice solo time jumps. Meanwhile, Calvin is having trouble in school without his magically abilities. He ends up trying to get a meet with a shady character called Gaslamp who sells wishes. When he finds him, Gaslamp gives Calvin a wish for free.
Doyle ends up jumping into the future where he sees older versions of some of his classmates. They seem to be preparing for battle. Suddenly, Doyle realizes that they are actually looking to fight the older version of Doyle himself! Voodoo comes to the rescue and brings Doyle back to the present. This experience causes Doyle to decide to drop out of school!
THE DARK PATH
Doyle has been at the center of a lot of Strange Academy stories. And it is always the same plot line, he doesn’t want to be as evil as his father. He suffers from this imposter syndrome and all sorts of self-doubt and anxiety. Eventually, I want to see him overcome these emotions and thoughts. I am secretly hoping that this story arc will address this so we can get on to new storylines for Strange Academy. Especially when the creative team is making cool decisions with Calvin.
I really enjoyed Strange Academy #14, but I want to say that I especially enjoyed the art. The cast of characters is unique and cool. Watching these students do the same magic with different character designs is solid and I want to see more and more.
BOTTOM LINE: SOLID
Strange Academy #14 is a solid story that is expertly drawn and told. I worry that the story will eventually become stale, but it is doing a great job so far. 4 out of 5 stars for this comic and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with Calvin next issue!
