Even though some of the story arcs these past couple of years have been hit and miss at times, Willingham continues to deliver interesting tales of the struggles between the fables and the villains of the home world, and this issue is no exception.

We last saw Madame Xanadu in her brief appearance in DC’s Countdown, but coming in June, readers can learn more about her many adventures as Matt Wagner (Grendel and Mage) and Amy Reeder Hadley team up to bring Madame Xanadu to Vertigo Comics. MADAME XANADU is a gothic love story between the mysterious Madame Xanadu and the Phantom Stranger. Their fraught, unconventional affair first blossoms in the final days of Camelot and develops over centuries, in the court of Kublai Khan, on the ships of Marco Polo, in London’s notorious Whitechapel district and on the streets of Greenwich Village. The…

Or – “The Vertigo Problem.” Recently, Gatekeeper Manager Deon (who doesn’t get Howard The Duck, but somehow loves XO: Manowar) explained to me his problem with Vertigo comics:  They’re just weird for weirdness’ sake.  I don’t know how true that assessment is, but I can clearly see the kernel of truth at the bottom of that statement.  I love classic Swamp Thing, I have read Hellblazer religiously since day one, I have all the Sandman trade paperbacks, I even loved Shade: The Changing Man.  But there came a point where Vertigo seemed to have found a niche, a hook, and…

[qt:http://www.dccomics.com/media/audio_video/Young_Liars_exclusive_trailer.m4v 600 340] DC Comics and Vertigo have posted a pretty cool looking trailer for its latest series Young Liars, written by David Lapham. Meet the YOUNG LIARS: Sadie Dawkins—a meek young heiress from Austin, TX who becomes addicted to drugs, moves to NYC and gets a bullet lodged in her brain, Annie X—the bulimic ex-model, Donnie—the transvestite druggy with a good heart, Cee Cee—the rock band groupie, Truman Runco—the schemer, and Danny—the habitual liar with an unnatural stalker-like obsession for Sadie. Sadie drags her group of misfit friends through one hair raising adventure after another stretching from the gritty,…

Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges, two of my favorite writers, have teamed up with Vertigo for the new ongoing comic series House of Mystery. A Pirate. A Poet. Tormented Lovers and the woman who tries not to come between them. For reasons unknown even to them, they have all been imprisoned in the House of Mystery, which functions as a tavern in an abandoned secret location. Together, they maintain the tavern and coax stories out of its patrons, all while they seek to discover the secrets behind their connections to each other and their unusual abode. The House of Mystery…

DC Comics has announced that Madame Xanadu will get her own ongoing Gothic romance series under the Vertigo banner. Told as a gothic romance and interweaving elements of history and mythology, MADAME XANADU revisits famous legends and stories of different eras through Madame Xanadu’s personal history and her odd connection to the mysterious Phantom Stranger. Who is she? How did she come to be known as Madame Xanadu? Why is she connected to so many of history’s most important figures? For the first time these secrets will be revealed. The series will be written by Matt Wagner, of Grendel…

Or – “Then The Door Was Opened And The Wind Appeared…” I really meant to pick up this series from issue #1, but I chose not to go in on Wednesday the week that #1 shipped. By the time I arrived for the Friday night closing shift, Mystery Theatre #1 was waaay gone, like a Ginger Baker drum solo in a dusty basement full of beatniks and hipsters. Most interestingly of all, nobody within a thirty minute radius had it either, which means that there’s a lotta love out there for Wesley Dodds. This pleases me, as kids today have…

This is going to be a big month for DC fans. First, 52 is over and the fallout can begin. Remember that strange image DC sent us a couple of weeks ago that hinted at the future of the DCU? Did you notice Batman was wearing some strange pirate/Arabic costume? Batman #666 looks like it reveals the tie between that mysterious DC image and the Bat. Also, check out the JSA/JLA crossover titles that were the hallmark of the Multiple Earth series from days of old. Second, May will be a month of direct figures from DC Unlimited including the…

I am so upset that HBO decided to not renew their popular western Deadwood.  It was probably one of the best shows HBO had going for it (besides Entourage of course).  Today, the Hollywood Reporter is reporting the cable channel will be developing a one-hour series based on Vertigo comics Preacher. Mark Steven Johnson, who wrote the script for the upcoming Ghost Rider movie is writing the pilot, with Howard Deutch attached as the director. This is great news for fans of the political/religious title and will certainly open the eyes of those viewers who think comics are still just…
