In just a few days, the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con will get underway! Even though the pandemic is subsiding, it still may be a very different version of the SDCC once again!
WHAT IS HAPPENING AT SDCC THIS YEAR?
In a case of really bad timing (as far as SDCC goes), the TV and movie writers and the actors are now on strike, and there is (as of this writing) no end in sight!
Normally, all kinds of news from the entertainment industry is being released during San Diego. Of course, we here at MajorSpoilers are primarily interested in the information about upcoming comic books and the like, but there could be TV, movie, video gaming, and other comics-related news that we need to cover! Each time there is an SDCC, Head Honcho Stephen Schleicher and his team keep fans informed about the latest and greatest developments from that con!
Based on what the writers, actors, and others CAN talk about during the strike, there may not be much going on this year, sadly! Of course, there are exceptions, including animation and comics, so perhaps we’ll see news along those lines, but just how much people want to release during SDCC will be something to watch. There will be a lot of solidarity among the writers and actors and such, so we might not get very much news at all! All we can do is wait and see what takes place!
Many of the entertainment giants have pulled out of appearing in the “big” rooms at SDCC that are usually where the biggest news is announced! THAT is something different!
Will it still be a good con to attend? Of course—actors and writers and all can still sign autographs and talk with fans but, according to some online, they won’t be able to discuss what they have worked on, were working on when the strike began, or will be doing in the months ahead.
It just might be an “auto-con” since autographs will be what fans can mostly obtain! But we’ll have to see just what this SDCC will be like in the days ahead!
IF YOU DO ATTEND
Many of us have to plan far, far ahead to be able to go to SDCC, so hotel room reservations were scheduled months ago. If you are staying with local friends, they are likely expecting you to be there, and they have made plans to help you enjoy the con!
If the entertainment companies are not doing some of the big activities they usually do, like taking over restaurants and the like in downtown San Diego, many of the fun happenings attendees enjoy might be fewer in number.
Does that mean you shouldn’t already be walking in preparation? No, you should definitely already be walking as much as possible so you can traverse downtown SDCC easily. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, I did NOT do that the first time I went to SDCC. It took me about two weeks to recover from that expedition! I was exhausted!
I haven’t seen the official panels schedules yet, but I imagine there will be a lighter load of those than normal and maybe even fewer people on them. I have seen many pros posting their schedules on social media, and that’s going to be good for fans to plan around! I bet there will be reminders around for fans to know what the stars and others who attend will be able to speak to and what they won’t be able to!
Remember the usual ways to having a great con—be sure to carry water bottles if at all possible so you can keep hydrated, wear loose clothing to keep comfortable in the warm weather, and do what you have to so you can keep your phone charged!
Even if you are at SDCC, be sure to check in here at MajorSpoilers regularly to keep up with what’s going on. Hey, when I have been there live, people online knew more about the news that was happening than I did when I was walking the con floor! And if you are NOT at SDCC, MajorSpoilers will be your best source of the latest news from one of the biggest cons of the year! You’ll know what’s happening!
WHAT ELSE SHOULD YOU BE DOING?
Of course, the website for the con itself is a place to go for vital information and updates! Personally, I would bookmark that site! I find this is true of almost all the cons I attend!
If you are meeting up with other fans during SDCC, work out a system of communication that will help you keep in touch! Whatever social media platform/email systems that you all use, be aware how you all want to communicate!
I also believe that, as much as I love to focus on the con I’m attending, it’s helpful to keep up with the news happening in the “real” world and in the local community. Something could happen that will impact your attending the con! What if streets are blocked off due to some local occurrence? You’ll need to know that as soon as possible! However you can do it, make it so!
Do you know people who have regularly attended SDCC previously? If you do, they will be excellent sources of information or processes you will need to know to get the most out of the con. Experience remains one of the best teachers, so you should take advantage of that! Or you can check out previous years of SDCC and the coverage on MajorSpoilers or other websites/social media to see what has taken place and what you can learn from this!
Whatever you can do to stay aware or get the most out of SDCC, do your research and keep up with what’s taking place! And be sure to check in here at MajorSpoilers so you can get the most out of San Diego Comic-Con 2023!
What do you think? Are you going to SDCC 2023? Have you attended San Diego Comic-Con in the past? What are you looking forward to taking place this week at SDCC? Whatever your opinions, be sure to share them in the space below!

Probably never going to attend SDCC in person (wrong continent) but I can say that current situation doesn’t bother me at all when it comes to Comic Con (otherwise its a different story). If anything, this can bring more attention to things I’m actually interested in, instead of endless Hollywood marketing hype about movies we may or may not see years from now.
