IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BRITISH ICE
Writers: Owen D. Pomery
Artist: Owen D. Pomery
Publisher: Top Shelf Productions
Cover Price: $14.99
SOLICITATION: Working for the British High Commission, Harrison Fleet is posted to a remote arctic island which is still, inexplicably, under British rule. As he struggles to understand why, and what interests he is protecting, Harrison learns just how much of the land and its community lies in the shadow cast by the outpost’s founder. Caught between hostile locals, the British Government, and an unforgiving physical environment, he begins dragging dark secrets into the light, unaware of the tragic repercussions they will cause. And help is very, very far away. Part noir, part historical mystery, British Ice explores the consequences of colonialism and the legacy of empire.
JONATHAN: It’s not a stretch to think that it’s sometimes forgotten that our favorite medium has the ability to tell grounded yet compelling stories. What’s most appealing to me though is that this is being released as a single volume rather than being broken up into monthly releases.
THE CLOCK #1
Writer: Matt Hawkins
Artist: Colleen Doran
Publisher: Top Cow Productions, Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Within three weeks, hundreds of millions of healthy people worldwide contract various forms of aggressive cancer, and the proliferation, seemingly a viral outbreak, stumps the best scientific minds available. But after a leading cancer researcher loses his wife and watches his nine-year-old daughter begin to succumb to the same illness, he must race against the clock to end a global conspiracy that could propel the world straight into WWIII…or worse.
INGRID: This just sounds so exciting! I love science, especially medical science. Pandemics are horrific, but fascinating. Connecting this to cancer is an interesting concept, and I cannot wait to read this one!
DAPHNE BYRNE #1
Writer: Laura Marks
Artist: Kelley Jones
Publisher: DC Comics/Hill House Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In the gaslit splendor of late 19th-century New York, rage builds inside 14-year-old Daphne. The sudden death of her father has left her alone with her irresponsible, grief-stricken mother-who becomes easy prey for a group of occultists promising to contact her dead husband. While fighting to disentangle her mother from these charlatans, Daphne begins to sense a strange, insidious presence in her own body…an entity with unspeakable appetites. What does “Brother” want? And could she even stop him if she tried?
MATTHEW: Everything from Hill House so far has been truly suspenseful, creepy stuff, and I’m hoping that this continues the trend. We know Kelley Jones can do scary and unworldly art already, so I’m really looking forward to this series.
FIREFLY: THE OUTLAW MA REYNOLDS #1
Writer: Greg Pak
Artist: Davide Gianfelice
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: After the shocking conclusion of Mal’s journey with Boss Moon, Mal hands himself into the Alliance…but it turns out its not him they want. The infamous Ma Reynolds is at the top of the Alliance’s Most Wanted, and if Mal doesn’t get to her first, the Alliance will!
MATTHEW: I’ve been enjoying Mal’s new BOOM! adventures, but I can’t miss the chance to meet his mother. This is a fan-casting dream… I’m leaning towards Emma Thompson, myself, but Diane Keaton would also be fun.
MILES MORALES: THE END #1
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Arist: Damion Scott
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover: Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: THE FINAL MILES MORALES STORY!
Humanity makes its last stand in the only place strong enough to survive: BROOKLYN. Former Spider-Man, Miles Morales, leads the last bastion of civilization into the future! Penned by MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN author SALADIN AHMED!
CHRISTOPHER: I’m intrigued by the cover of an older Miles Morales swinging in that hooded costume. Something about that concept appeals to my sensibilities.
MYSTERE #5 (OF 5)
Writer: Ben Meares
Artist: Sergio Arino
Publisher: Zenescope Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Mary has been betrayed and imprisoned in the Woman in Black’s underground lair, and has been given a choice: use Mystere’s powers of necromancy to do the Woman in Black’s bidding, or face the Blacksmith’s soul-sucking hammer. Will Mary find a way to destroy this evil-and immortal-woman, or will she succumb to the grave circumstances she’s found herself in? Find out in this pulse-stopping finale!
CHRISTOPHER: I’ve enjoyed this particular story arc and love when mystic magic and modern day meet. Looking forward to the finale!
POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #2
Writer: Ryan Parrott
Artist: Simone Di Meo
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Tommy faces a shocking betrayal within the Foot Clan that puts him in the crosshairs of their leader – Shredder! But can the Rangers and Turtles put their differences aside before Shredder unleashes his ultimate weapon? No Rangers or Turtles fan can miss this shocking last page!
MATTHEW: Turtles! Rangers! Shocking betrayals! If you’re not psyched for this, you’re probably not paying attention.
RIVERS OF LONDON: THE FEY AND THE FURIOUS #3
Writer: Ben Aaronovitch and Andrew Cartmel
Artist: Mariano LaClaustra
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The award-winning urban fantasy series Rivers of London continues a new story of fast cars and fairy queens, from series creator Ben Aaronovitch. When an English race car washes up in the Netherlands, wizarding cop Peter Grant is called in to investigate its unusual cargo. Fresh from suspension, Peter infiltrates the street racing big leagues – but can he find the finish line when he’s sucked into a real-life fairyland? A canonical story, set after bestselling novel Lies Sleeping.
INGRID: Oh man, urban fantasy crossing over with illegal street racing, in Europe, no less. This sounds so cool! But in this world where magic and the supernatural are real, Peter Grant gets pulled from his current race straight into fairyland, which makes his investigation all the more strange and complicated.
STAR #1
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Javiar Pina
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: BORN OF THE REALITY STONE, THE BREAKOUT CHARACTER FROM CAPTAIN MARVEL FLIES SOLO!
Ambitious reporter Ripley Ryan rocked New York City when she became the hero STAR, adored by everyone. But in truth she was Dr. Minerva’s attempt at a Kree-human Super-Soldier. Desperate for the strength to control her own destiny, she tried to kill Captain Marvel – and failed. Ripley was left, defeated and powerless, in the Raft…or so she thought. The Reality Stone has found her, and now no prison can hold her. You thought you knew what the Infinity Stones were capable of. Think again.
JONATHAN: I haven’t read Captain Marvel in quite awhile, so I’m relatively unfamiliar with this character but I’m curious nonetheless. The solicitation does a good job making Star seem like a compelling character and depending on how reliant this is on past material, this sounds like it’ll be a fun miniseries.
X-FORCE #5
Write: Ben Percy
Artist: Joshua Cassara
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: DEADLY CHOICES CARRY DARK CONSEQUENCES!
First, Domino and Forge have to pick up the pieces as the team faces a major setback! Then, Beast takes matters into his own hands when a piece of new technology threatens the safety of the nation.
CHRISTOPHER: When X-Men launched a brand new set of #1s, I was super excited. I think this is the one that has grabbed my interest the most. Dark, gritty, and tense; the story has been nothing but exciting.
ROBOT OVERLORD: IT’S 2020 KIDS! YOU NEED TO READ MORE COMICS!
