IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN BEYOND #31
Writer: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Rick Leonardi, Wade Von Grawbadger
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With a series of spectacular high-tech heists, a mysterious new villain known as the Splitt is preying on Neo-Gotham. Only Batman is capable of stopping him, yet Terry McGinnis wants nothing more than to get his life back to normal after his destructive battle with The Joker. Making this even more difficult is the strange, enigmatic fate of Bruce Wayne!
WAYNE: If you enjoyed this animated series, you really need to be reading this comic. It continues on after the cartoon, and it’s living up to the standards the show set. Very well done!
DETECTIVE COMICS #1002
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessy
Publisher: DC
Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Batman’s first battle with the Arkham Knight was as brutal as they come…but things are about to get worse, as one of his most important allies jumps into the fray, and ends up in far over their head!
WAYNE: Even if you’ve never played the videogame featuring this Batman foe, you should be reading this storyline. Great stuff, but Mr. Tomasi always tells a great story!
DIAL H FOR HERO #2
Writer: Sam Humphries
Artist: Joe Quinones
Publisher: DC Comics/Wonder Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: On the road (in a food truck full of mayonnaise!) with the amazing H-Dial that gifts the user with a new superpower every time they place a call, teenage runaways Miguel and Summer come under attack by others who crave the power the dial offers. With cryptic calls from the “phone zone” and no one to turn to for help, the adolescent adventurers come to a breaking point, where they either must work together or lose more than just the dial.
INGRID: I was not familiar with Dial H, but after reading the first issue, I am really interested to see where this story goes. Miguel and Summer are on the run, they have the H Dial with them…and there are bad guys after them. It’s shaping up to be an exciting story!
MATTHEW: I’m a sucker for a Dial H story, even the really stinky ones, but the first issue of this series hit a lot of good notes and I’m psyched to see where it all goes!
FLASH #69
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Scott Kolins
Publisher: DC
Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Riot in Central City! Trickster has pulled out all the stops in his assault on Flash’s hometown, and the Scarlet Speedster is powerless to crack Trickster’s code! Our hero is faced with an impossible choice: save the people of Central City-or let the villain who caused it all escape to wreak havoc another day!
WAYNE: The Flash is one of those under-rated (and believed to be over-powered) heroes that some writers just have trouble with. Not Mr. Williamson. He’s doing some of the best Flash I have ever read, and that’s saying something! Highly recommended!
GHOST TREE #1
Writer: Bobby Curnow
Artist: Simon Gane
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Seeking refuge from an unhappy life, Brandt returns to his ancestral home in Japan to find a haunted tree and the departed souls that are drawn to it, including his Grandfather. Brandt attempts to heal some of history’s wounds but will he be able to find any measure of peace for himself when someone special from his past returns?
INGRID: I am always on the lookout for books that seem interesting and not like something I’ve read before. Ghost Tree #1 is set in Japan, and the idea of a haunted tree that attracts departed souls just sends shivers up my spine. I have a good feeling about this one.
MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS #38
Writer: Marguerite Bennet
Artist: Simone Di Meo
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Power Rangers arrive at the home of the Solar Ranger…and learn the shocking secret behind the universe that’s drawn them together!
MATTHEW: Why these Rangers? Why now? These questions and more have been burning in my head for several issues and I’ve been itching to find out the secrets of ‘Beyond The Grid.’
THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #43
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Jamie McKelvie
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “OKAY,” Part Four. Jamie, this is the last time we have to do big crowd and fight scenes. I swear, we can get through this. Two more issues after this, and then we can have a sleep.
MATTHEW: The endgame has begun and I miss this book already. I suspect they have a few more surprises up their sleeves, though…
