IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
A-FORCE #9
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Paulo Siqueira
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • The fates of NICO MINORU, a mysterious missing girl named Alice, and a small town in Colorado are all tied together as CIVIL WAR II heats up and threatens to tear A-FORCE apart.
• The team, with ELSA BLOODSTONE in foul-mouthed tow, splits up to hunt down the apparent source of the trouble in the hopes of saving the town.
• However, it soon becomes apparent that all is not what it seems with the team-A-Force is changing-and by morning there may not be anyone left to save the day.
MATTHEW: Replacing She-Hulk (hopefully temporarily) with Elsa Bloodstone is a stroke of genius. This book doesn’t seem to get the attention it deserves…
ALL STAR BATMAN #2
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: John Romita Jr.
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “My Own Worst Enemy” part 2! All aboard the train ride from hell! Batman and Two-Face continue their journey to Harvey Dent’s cure through an assassin-infested landscape. But can the Dark Knight continue his crusade across the countryside when Two Face turns one of his greatest allies against him?
JON: The first installment of All Star Batman was nothing short of epic. Snyder is the quintessential Batman writer of this generation and JRJR’s art pairs perfectly with the story. Definitely get your hands on this book.
STEPHEN: I did enjoy the premise of the first issue, and Scott Snyder hasn’t disappointed in the past, so I’m going to check out All Star Batman this week, and you should, too!
WAYNE: The book of the week, in my opinion! But whenever Mr. Snyder writes Batman, it will be!
ANIMOSITY #2
Writer: Marguerite Bennett
Artist: Rafael De Latorre
Publisher: AfterShock Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: One year after the “Wake,” all Animals have gained the powers of thought and speech–and the ability power to take revenge. New York City erupts as a battleground between the what remains of the U.S. Government and the rise of the ferocious new “Animilitary,” who seek to carve out a peaceful homeland of their own. Caught in the middle is a Bloodhound and his 10-year-old adopted human daughter, desperate to escape the conflict, and find a haven at last…
WAYNE: When a comic shatters your perceptions, that’s one well worth reading! I can’t look at my dogs and not wonder what they’re really thinking! Great book, highly recommended!
DEADPOOL #18
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: Mike Hawthorne and Brian Level
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: CIVIL WAR II TIE-IN! The one thing everyone who knows Deadpool agrees on: They’d really love to sock him one! You don’t need a vision to tell you Deadpool’s gonna screw up his life!
ETIENNE: I am so utterly sick of Marvels event comics. Secret Wars pretty much finished me off for bothering to get into any series again, but Deadpool has always been good value. He tends to run straight through events as if they aren’t there and this looks to be no different.
DETECTIVE COMICS #940
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Eddy Barrows
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Rise Of The Batmen” part 7! This epic concludes with a battle against the Colony that will change Batman’s world forever-and in a way you’d never expect! Whether they win or lose, they’ve already lost…
JON: Detective Comics is arguably the best DC Rebirth title to date. Tynion has crafted an incredible story and Barrow’ art is superb. Plus, a rumor about a certain character’s fate is certain readers shocked should it come to pass.
STEPHEN: WHY ISN’T TIM DRAKE ON THE COVER! WHERE IS TIM DRAKE! WHAT HAS DC DONE!? Time to get your hands on this book!
DOOM PATROL #1
Writer: Gerard Way
Artist: Nick Derington
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The atoms are buzzing. The daydreams crowd sentient streets, and the creative team has been warned, “Turn back now or suffer the mighty consequence of sheer, psycho-maniacal mayhem.” Generation-arsonists unite-this is DOOM PATROL, and the God of the Super Heroes is bleeding on the floor.
A blenderized reimagining of the ultimate series of the strange, DOOM PATROL combines elements from classic runs, new directions, and things that could not be. Our entry point is Casey Brinke, a young EMT on the graveyard shift to abstract enlightenment, with a past so odd that she’s not entirely sure what is real and what is not. Along with her partner, Sam Reynolds, the pair blaze a path through the city and its denizens, finding the only quiet that exists at 3am is the chaos of the brain. When the pair answer a hit-and-run call, they find themselves face to face with a familiar figure: Cliff Steele, AKA Robotman.
MATTHEW: One of the earliest series I got hooked on from #1 (1987 version, anyways), so there’s no way I’m letting this one get by. The Young Animals imprint seems like it’s going to be bugnuts crazy and I’m ready.
WAYNE: I’ve long thought that if comics shops were around when the Doom Patrol first appeared, they’d still be on their initial run! Love the concept, can’t wait to see what happens!
GRIMM FAIRY TALE VAN HELSING VS FRANKENSTEIN #2
Writer: Patrick Shand
Artist: Jason Metcalf
Publisher: Zenescope
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Liesel Van Helsing faces the devastating results of her last hunt… and now, she must stand up against a foe more horrific that she could’ve ever imagined. With her back against the wall and no one to help her, Helsing must use her wits if she wishes to survive her first encounter with Frankenstein!
ETIENNE: With the rest of Grimm going the way of the dinosaur, it is nice to see one of the old characters getting a really classic monster vs hero match up. With Zenescope these small 4-6 issue miniseries can be really hit and miss, but after the last issue this is certainly looking to be on the better end of the scale.
MOCKINGBIRD #7
Writer: Chelsea Cain
Artist: Kate Niemczyk
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • Trapped on a ship full of super hero cosplayers, Bobbi investigates the murder of one of the passengers. But this ship of fools has dark secrets. Someone is pulling the strings.
• Bobbi, Hunter, and a motley band of surprisingly committed cosplayers must puzzle out the conspiracy as the ship continues to circle the Bermuda Triangle.
MATTHEW: Another book that flies under too many radars, Chelsea Cain’s Mockingbird is the new definitive version…
TOIL AND TROUBLE
Writer: Mairghread Scott
Artist: Kelly Matthews
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Cover Price: $29.99
SOLICITATION: A daring reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The three fates-Riata, Cait, and Smertae-have always been guiding and protecting Scotland unseen. When there is a disagreement between the sisters, Riata and Smertae will use men as pawns, and Smertae will direct Macbeth to a crown he was never meant to have.
ETIENNE: This is going to be one of those expensive impulse buys, but when I was looking through the solicits for this week, the comic jumped out at me as something I had to have. Although you should never judge a book by its cover, I certainly have bought a huge number because of them.
WONDER WOMAN #6
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Nicola Scott
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “WONDER WOMAN YEAR ONE” part 3! Diana brings Steve back home, but the reception is not what either of them expected. Amid suspicion and a looming threat, the Patrons pay a visit, and new friendships are forged.
JON: Wonder Woman has been a solid title thanks to Greg Rucka’s strong love of the character. Add to that the incredible art from Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott respectively, and you’ve got a title that’s sure to have something for everyone.
