Why why WHY are they printing this damn thing again?
To have something on the shelves that looks like it might be a tie-in to the movies when Iron Man 2 is in theaters. Notice how the cover steals a pose directly from the first movie? I’m guessing they figure the movie is a good marketing tool to get people reading the comic and, well, this is as good a place as any to get them to jump on board.
But it’s NOT as good a place as any. Extremis isn’t a typical Iron Man story at all. You don’t call Warren Ellis when you want something normal and in-continuity; you call him for something artsy where he takes your characters and does his own thing with them. His reputation makes him sell well with comic fans, but for the casual reader, he has no reputation.
I guess Marvel’s problem is that they need something with the current armor, but almost the whole time he’s been wearing it, Tony has been wrapped up in Civil War and its outgrowths. It was bold of them not to put the storyline on hold for marketing reasons, and I respect that (much like DC killing off Batman right when a new movie came out), but they pay the price in situations like this.
