After becoming the largest movie of 2014, it is no surprise that Marvel wants to do more with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and we learned yesterday what their next step is: an animated television series.
Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, announced the Guardians of the Galaxy animated show during a panel at New York Comic Con saying,
This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series. After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew – now they’ll get it.
Loeb also showed unfinished clips of Rocket and Star-Lord to the lucky Comic Con attendees that were present for the panel and huge announcement.
Much like the film, the television show will focus on Peter Quill aka Star-Lord as he tries to save the universe with rag tag team of Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Drax the Destroyer we saw come together on screen.
The Guardians animated show will join Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man on Marvel’s parent companies channel Disney XD. Don’t forget that Star Wars Rebels also just debuted on the same channel, so we may be seeing a huge powerhouse of animated properties rising with Disney XD.
As far as people involved with the project are concerned, we only have a slew of producers attached including Joe Quesada, Jeph Loeb, Stan Lee, Stephen Wacker and more. It has not been stated whether any of the cast from the record-breaking film will be lending their voices to the show, but seeing as how Avengers Assemble doesn’t use the likes of Robert Downey Jr. for that show I wouldn’t expect Chris Pratt to jump into a recording booth anytime soon.
Guardians of the Galaxy is set to air on Disney XD in 2015.
