Maleficent opens in theaters nation wide today, and I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the first time Disney took a crack at Sleeping Beauty with a look at Eyvind Earle’s graphic style.
Though I’ve really only watched the movie all the way through once, I have always been fascinated with Earle’s style and how that helped create dramatic wide vistas for the 70mm release of this movie.
Eyvind Earle was the artist who took the lead on the visual design, and his inspiration came directly from European medieval art. At the same time, there’s a distinct graphic style in the backgrounds he created which reveal it’s a Disney, 1950s interpretation of that period of art. – via Disnerd Adventures
