ANGEL AND FAITH SEASON 10 #1
Writer: Victor Gischler
Artist: Will Conrad
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Angel’s work is never done. During his most recent world saving, a part of London was transformed and flooded with magic. Who better to watch over this magical community than Angel? At least, that’s what he thinks. Meanwhile, Faith starts a new chapter in her life—slaying zompires alongside Buffy?!
* Will Conrad (Serenity, Nightwing) returns to the Whedonverse!
* Executive produced by Joss Whedon!
ROB: While I’m still a bit behind on Season 9, I am more than excited to see this continue into Season 10. Of the two ongoings I found this to be the stronger of the two and will happily continue to read.
AQUAMAN AND THE OTHERS #1
Writer: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Lan Medina, Allen Martinez
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: A “FUTURES END” prelude! Spinning out of AQUAMAN, the King of Atlantis and his teammates find themselves targeted by an unknown foe that wants their Atlantean artifacts! Don’t miss the start of this all-new series!
MATTHEW: This book feels like it might be something akin to Batman and The Outsiders, which I adored. Either way, I’m interested in seeing a world where Aquaman has two ongoing series…
ROB: I’ve been behind on the DCU and was looking for somewhere to jump back in. Bringing a set of characters I had been enjoying into the mix is enough to make me choose this one.
CALIBAN #1
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: Facundo Percio
Publisher: Avatar Press
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Master storyteller GARTH ENNIS and Fashion Beast artist FACUNDO PERCIO team up to deliver a haunting new epic of science fiction horror. The crew of the Caliban travels hyperspace on nothing more than a routine trip for the giant vessel. Just human beings that have been inside a bit too long, confident of no other life in the Galaxy, and all the vastness of space to remind them how far they are from home. But when an impossible accident suddenly causes the Caliban to slam into an abandoned alien ship, a nightmare in space begins to unfold. Ennis delivers his unique brand of flawed characters, spot-on dialog, and trademark flare for the unexpected in a new series in the vein of Alien. This is the beginning of the end for the crew of the Caliban.
GEORGE: Alien has been done to death, and none of its many imitators has ever quite reached its heights. That said, Ennis is nothing if not inventive, and his storytelling chops could easily put an interesting spin on this set-up. Plus, Avatar is just the place for the bloodiest of modern horror.
INHUMAN #1
Writer: Charles Soule
Artist: Joe Madureira
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The newest super heroes of the Marvel Universe are born! A cloud of Terrigen mist is moving around the world turning regular people into Inhumans with amazing powers. But not everyone thinks this is a good thing. Discover the secret history of the Marvel Universe and get in at the ground floor of the next big Marvel franchise!
ROB: Here I thought this had already come and gone. New characters, different origin, still interesting ideas. I’m happy to see I didn’t miss out.
MAGNETO #2
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • Horrors from Magneto’s past inform his decisions in the present as he hunts down the source of the newest threat to mutantkind.
• Meanwhile, S.H.I.E.L.D. catches a glimpse of Magneto’s new band of followers…
GEORGE: The debut issue of Magneto was serious business and I’m hungry for more. Check out Matthew’s review of issue one, or just take my word for it. This is a series to watch (and read).
MOON KNIGHT #2
Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Declan Shalvey
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The best new comic of 2014 continues with a story that has to be experienced to be believed!
GEORGE: Best new comic of 2014? I’m not sure if I would go that far. But if you read my review of the first issue of Moon Knight, you know that I’m definitely on board with this comic. With Ellis and Shalvey together, it’s kind of hard not to be.
SHE-HULK #3
Writer: Charles Soule
Artist: Javier Pulido
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: • We the people find you DOOM!
• When the son of Victor Von Doom seeks extradition, Jen Walters will go to the ends of the earth for Justice!
• All this, and Matt Murdock too as Charles Soule (THUNDERBOLTS) and Javier Pulido (HAWKEYE) continue 2014’s sleeper hit!
MATTHEW: I honestly don’t expect this comic to last, but it’s been a fun couple of issues anyway. Pulido is doing an unusual style, the story has an interesting hook, and it’s great to see Jennifer back in action again… You really should check it out while you can.
STAR TREK GOLD KEY ARCHIVES HC VOL 01
Writer: Arnold Drake, George Kashdan
Artist: Nevio Zaccara, Alberto Giolitti, Giovanni Ticci
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Presenting the first comic book adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her crew! Fully re-mastered and with a new throwback cover, Star Trek Gold Key Archives, Vol. 1 collects issues #1–6.
MATTHEW: A collected trade of the Gold Key Trek issues was some of the first Star Trek I ever encountered, and while it’s not exactly ‘City On The Edge Of Forever,’ these are entertaining stuff nonetheless, with some pretty excellent art.
STEPHEN: So looking forward to this collection. As a young one, a friend of mine had a collection of these issues and I wanted them for my very own for a long, long time.
STARLIGHT #2
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Goran Parlov
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Duke McQueen once saved an alien world from destruction—but it happened in a place nobody believes in, during a time nobody remembers. Surrounded by memories of his late wife and his happier past, Duke’s days as a hero are long gone…or so he thinks! Now, a young visitor from the world Duke once saved is coming to him with a desperate plea for help. It’s one last chance at adventure for Duke, and another chapter to unfold in the ever-expanding Millarworld Universe!
STEPHEN: This is an awesome issue – on par with the first issue. Millar and Parlov continue to tell a great story about a man getting a second chance at being the hero to the world – not our world, but a world. Great read!
