I’m glad to see this restructuring of Marvel’s all-ages line. These look like fun, and they’re really putting good talent to work on them. I hope they’ll keep this level of commitment. I’m thinking about getting subscriptions to these books for my 7 year old as a gateway into superhero comics (which he’s showing little interest in right now).
I hope they stick with this line, because I really got a kick out of Marvel Adventures Avengers; maybe because it’s tied to the TV shows it’ll get more of a push. But then there’s always that whole “these stories don’t count” fallacy to deal with when keeping these books afloat…
I used to get a lot of crap from comic fans when I’d pick up titles like the old “Batman Adventures” and “X-Men Adventures” alongside the regular titles, but I always thought they were fun stories to read even if they didn’t take place within the main continuity. If I avoided every story that took place in an alternate timeline or that otherwise “didn’t count” in the main continuity (or even might be retconned out in a few years) I’d probably only have about 20 comics total.
I’m torn. Part of me thinks that Marvel is taking up too much Universe space. Do you really need three? Then I think, well they are just calling it Ultimate Spiderman with Peter at Spidey to please everyone that was upset about Miles. But then I see Dan Slott is writing, so I will probably read the first issue at least.
They’re calling it Ultimate Spiderman because the cartoon series is called that and the comic is an extension of the cartoon.
DC’s Adventure line was really wonderful all-ages stuff that really captured the essence of the characters without the controversies or adult content of the mainstream line, so hopefully Marvel’s attempt will be similar. More entry points into more iconic versions of the characters is a good thing to me.
No Mini-Marvels leaves me still sad. Glad Marvel is putting some top talents on these titles though!
