It had all the cliches. The Indian tracker, the small town preacher who acts as the voice of reason, the nerdy tavern owner named Doc, the kid growing up due to rough circumstances, the haunted story of Indians attacking a town, the tribe of whooping Indians capturing the main characters, the two tough guys learning to respect each other despite their differences.
What’s not to like?
And…. I liked it! It worked both as a Western and as a Sci-Fi film. I heard that some critics said that the film makers didn’t quite pull it off, but I don’t know what they’re talking about. But then again, the same critics complain every time a Batman movie comes out that it doesn’t compare to Shakespeare. Dude, we’re talking about a comic book movie. If I want to see a Shakespeare play, I’ll go see a Shakespeare play. If I want fun and excitement, I’ll watch something like Cowboys and Aliens. Not every movie HAS to be “GONE WITH THE WIND” or ‘TERMS OF ENDEARMENT”.
I’m glad you liked it, but personally, I thought it sucked harder than a two-dollar whore trying to make the rent at the end of the month. A movie with a great premise, talented actors and a director that knows what he is doing, but the movie couldn’t make up its mind what it wanted to do or be.
When I left the showing I overheard four other people complaining about the movie as well.

I just wanted to say that the only thing I enjoyed about the movie was the utter ridiculousness of them cramming in so many stupid cliches into it. I love several of the cast, but even as amazing as Sam Rockwell is, even he couldn’t make the part of Doc compelling.
