Comics Portal: Here Comes ‘Batman/Deadpool’ #1!

Wayne HallBy Wayne HallNovember 10, 20255 Mins Read

On Wednesday, November 19th, the next in the series of Marvel/DC crossovers will arrive, this time called Batman/Deadpool #1!

    THE CROSSOVER CRAZE CONTINUES!

Deadpool, Batman, Constantine, Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom, Joker, Grant Morrison, Fans who thought that crossovers between Marvel and DC would be a big draw were recently proved correct when Deadpool/Batman #1 recently was released! As I’m writing this, the book has already hit a second printing—and that was after all the buzz and discussion motivated local comics shops to order heavily.

Well, next week will be the much-anticipated follow-up to that hit comic, this time from DC/Marvel (last one was Marvel/DC), and fans everywhere are doing their best to be sure they get the number of copies and the covers they want.

Honestly, this is what we were all hoping for—something of a shot in the arm to the comics industry. And the fact that these books have been initially released in comics stores, not digitally, has forced fans who have stopped going to shops back to them in order to be able to get these comics. Well done!

    WHAT’S IN IT?

Deadpool, Batman, Constantine, Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom, Joker, Grant Morrison, I may be preaching to the choir here, but there still may be some who don’t know just what’s going to hit the stands next week! First, DC’s official description:

    >> “it’s a metaphysical car crash between two storytelling philosophies. One character broods in the shadows of trauma and justice. The other cartwheels through chaos, breaking the fourth wall and occasionally the laws of physics. Together, they’re forced to confront a threat that doesn’t just endanger their worlds—it questions their very existence as fictional constructs.”<<

    So, here goes:

Batman/Deadpool #1 features a main story, “The Cosmic Kiss Caper,” by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora, who previously collaborated on Klaus. Given Mr. Mora’s rise in popularity as an artist and Mr. Morrison’s longstanding status as a comics writer, I have very high expectations for this tale!

This issue will also include four backup stories:

    • John Constantine and Doctor Strange in “A Magician Walks into a Universe” from Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, and Frank Cvetkovic
    • Nightwing (Dick Grayson) and Wolverine (Laura Kinney) in “Sticks & Snikts” by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott
    • Harley Quinn and The Incredible Hulk in “Harley & Hulk’s Amazin’ Saturday!!!!” by Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, and Dave Sharpe
    • Static (Virgil Hawkins) and Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) in “New Friends in Old Places” from G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala, and Steve Wands

I like the choice of pairings and am “ecstatic” (pardon the pun) about the creators who will be bringing these stories to the printed page.

The big question is, will it live up to the Deadpool/Batman #1 book that came out a short time ago? The DC fan in me hopes it will be even better, but it has a LOT to live up to. It comes with a hefty price tag of $7.99 for the main cover and $8.99 for the ones with variant covers. Somehow, I doubt there will be much hesitation for a book like this one, though!

    THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!

BatmanDeadpool1bGiven the success of the first book and the anticipation for the new one next week, it’s no surprise that there is even more to come, including two new Spider-Man/Superman books coming in 2026! These will be in celebration of the original Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man #1 50 years ago! I’ve previously mentioned other crossovers I’d like to see (including JSA/Invaders), so I won’t go there again.

I do have to say, though, that though I’m often less than excited about supernatural pairings because author tend to pull a rabbit out of their hats when forced to resolve a tale, I’m actually pretty interested in the Constantine/Dr. Strange meeting. They are very different in methods and personalities, so it should make some sparks fly, among other things!

I never thought I would ever say this, but the meeting of the Hulk and Harley Quinn (who is doing her own crossover with Elvira in another book) should be fun. I remember the Justice League Action cartoon that had Harley meeting up with the Titano, the Super-Ape! I couldn’t figure out just how that would ever work, but it turned out to be one of my very favorite episodes of that show!

Also, I should mention the fascinating covers on this book! I wish some of these pairings would happen in full-blown stories, such as the Joker meeting Doctor Doom. That would be something to read! Again, it’s quite a contrast between the two, so when they interact, it should be interesting to read! (Maybe next year in Deadpool/Batman #2?)

WILL WE GET TIRED OF THIS SOON?

Deadpool, Batman, Constantine, Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom, Joker, Grant Morrison, I’ve been noticing some fans online (and some of my friends) are already saying it’s too much already! But then, some of those folks just don’t like it when something comes along that they didn’t think would work, then it resonates with other fans more than they wanted.

There will always be what I like to call “boo birds,” people who don’t like it when someone has success larger than what they actually want those people to have. I often just ignore those cat-calls, wishing for failure. I prefer to just ride the wave for as long as it deserves our attention—much more fun!

I’m sure the time will come when we’ll grow weary of seeing crazy team-ups like these—but that’s not today! I’m having a great time even just anticipating what’s coming!

Keep it up, Marvel and DC!

What do you think? Are you looking forward to more DC/Marvel madness? Or are you already starting to get tired of all this? As always, I’d like to know—what other team-ups would you like to see happen? Whatever your opinion, share it on the Major Spoilers Discord server.
