On Saturday, September 20th, Batman Day returns to local comics shops! It’s always held to honor this iconic superhero and his legacy.

Here’s the skinny on how Batman Day came to be: Batman Day is an annual event organized by DC Entertainment to celebrate and promote Batman, the first one on the 23rd of July, 2014, for San Diego Comic-Con and Batman’s 75th Anniversary. It followed the first Superman Day the previous year, alongside the release of the Man of Steel movie. Subsequent Batman Days have been on either the third or fourth Saturday in September, such as this one.
Be sure to check with your local store to see just what they have happening on that big Bat-day! There might be costume contests, special Bat-books available to buy, or other big Bat-events!
And we have to face it—Batman is THE biggest hero in DC Comics! He recently released a new #1 issue that has been selling like crazy, the extremely popular Absolute Batman series that is the linchpin for the entire Absolute line, Detective Comics #1100 has been released, two series with the Dynamic Duo in their titles—Batman and Robin, then Robin and Batman, and there’s a future version comic called Immortal Legend Batman. And that is just beginning to scratch the surface!
Batman is an inspiring hero. Though Bruce Wayne may have come from tragedy and pain, he’s still managed to rise above his struggles and become a symbol of justice and strength. His heroism inspires us all to keep fighting against the forces of evil, no matter how daunting they may seem.
- Batman has one of the very best rogues galleries. From The Joker and The Riddler to Two–Face and Mr. Freeze, Batman has some of the most iconic villains in all of comics. These adversaries are all distinct characters with their own motivations, abilities and morals that make them both terrifying and fascinating at the same time.
- Batman represents hope. Yes, Superman’s symbol means “hope” in Kryptonian, but Batman is the real creator of hope in the DCU. No matter the situation or obstacle he’s faced with, Batman always finds a way to succeed. Through his sheer willpower and sheer determination he is able to remind us never give up on our dreams and that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.
- Batman sells like crazy! It doesn’t matter if he is on his own, working with Scooby Doo and his gang, or in the newer Justice League Unlimited, put Batman in the story, and you have a comic that will sell very well!
- Many different versions of Batman are popular. You can have a future Batman, a historic Batman from the past, an Aztec version of Batman, Adam West as the “Bright Knight,” an animated series that still sparkles today (Batman: The Animated Series), Christian Bale as the “Dark Knight,” a former teen heartthrob as Batman (Robert Pattinson), and many, many other Batmen. My personal favorite is still Ben Affleck, who I was very concerned about when he was chosen because he had already been Daredevil in films. However, his on-screen performance won me over!

It’s a great time to be a Bat-fan!
Of course, I remember the days when Batman as the Caped Crusader was NOT so big. There was a time in the 1990s when DC very nearly cancelled Detective Comics because the sales were so poor. They almost did it on a Friday afternoon, but they decided to reconsider it after a weekend off. Obviously, they did not go through with that plan, and they are better off for it!
So, here’s hoping we have many more years of Batman Day and his various adventures in the various modes of storytelling, be it in animation, comic books, live-action shows and movies, or anything else!
What do you think? Is Batman going to continue to grow in popularity? Is Batman Day something you celebrate? If so, how? Whatever your opinion, be sure to share it on our Discord Server!
