PRESS RELEASE
There’s enormous power in the capability to reclaim your identity and your life. From the brilliant mind of Sarah H. Cho (RED LIGHT), and with art from C.P. Smith (SINS OF THE SALTON SEA), Artists Writers & Artisans (AWA) today announced CAMGIRL, a psychosexual thriller set at the intersection of technology, sex, and parasocial relations that sets its sights on the rising cultural obsession known as the Asian fetish. In this kinky – and occasionally bloody – story, Cho’s protagonist confronts personal demons to turn the tables on a relentless cyberstalker and reclaim who she really is. The 52-page one-shot graphic novella launches on February 12, 2025.
“At its core, CAMGIRL is a story about a woman rebuilding her life and reclaiming who she is – a strong individual who is confident in herself and how she views the world. The protagonist, Dani, becomes so detached from reality after a mental health crisis that she loses the ability to trust her own instincts and must find her way back,” said creator Sarah Cho. “Her story let me explore themes that I think about often – how people view and treat Asian women and the dangers that come along with Asian fetishization, the stigmatization of sex work, the different faces of abuse, and the power dynamics of sex. I hope that as readers dive into Dani’s story they will come away with a deeper understanding that there is more than one way to be an Asian American woman.”
With this new story, Sarah and artist C.P. Smith examine how cultural stereotypes fuel erotic obsession, the perilous overlap of sex and commerce, and dangers of the online world. Vibrant visuals and captivating artwork take readers on a journey in an erotic thriller where protagonist Dani must meet her demons head-on. CAMGIRL touches on many important themes, including the stigma around sex work, how the entertainment industry plays into Asian stereotypes, the perils of parasocial relationships, and how women must adapt to survive in a truculent business world.
In CAMGIRL, Dani is independent, loves to party, and makes a whole lot of money. Kyoko, Dani’s online alter-ego, is obedient, exotic, and a walking stereotype that caters to her customer’s basest fantasies. When one of Kyoko’s most ardent followers starts to send her increasingly threatening messages, Dani’s two lives become dangerously intertwined. To turn the tables on a relentless stalker who seems to know everything about her, Dani must confront her personal demons and rediscover who she is and what she’s capable of doing.
“Sarah is a unique voice in the world of erotic fiction,” said Axel Alonso, Chief Creative Officer of AWA. “RED LIGHT, Sarah’s first work with us, an erotic thriller set against a speculative science fiction backdrop has been a consistent fan-favorite title for our AWA readers, and I have no doubt that CAMGIRL will mesmerize readers with the world Sarah and C.P. have created.”
AWA’s CAMGIRL is written and created by Sarah H. Cho and artist collaborator C.P. Smith, with covers by Alison Sampson (DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH) and Tula Lotay (SOMNA: A BEDTIME STORY). The one-shot graphic novella will be available Wednesday, February 12, 2025, both digitally and in stores wherever comic books are sold.
