NBM Graphic Novels will release Surrounded: America’s First School for Black Girls, 1832, a new graphic novel from Wilfrid Lupano and Stephane Fert, just in time for Black History Month.
SURROUNDED transports readers to the early 19th century, a time when education for Black
girls was not only scarce but often met with fierce opposition. Through the lens of history,
Lupano tells the story of courageous women and their fight for empowerment and knowledge in
a society that sought to silence them.
Lupano emphasizes the relevance of the narrative, stating, “The [graphic novel]brings us back to two current themes: the struggle of women for their rights and visibility in society, and police violence against minorities. These violences are cyclical in the United States. But, from time to time, a case like that of George Floyd becomes a symbol that everyone seizes upon.”
Surrounded: America’s First School for Black Girls, 1832 is scheduled to arrive on February 11, 2025.
