Summarizing every story in Marvel Voices: X-Men #1 would make this review lengthy, leaving little room for discussion. The stories often revolve around relationships. The opening story features Gambit and Rogue, and we encounter other romantic tales involving Mystique and Destiny. Family dynamics are explored through Jubilee, Deathstrike, and Aunt Hope, while friendships take center stage with Storm and Iceman and another featuring Emma Frost and Jean Grey. There’s even a narrative focusing on Arakko’s perspective on dating culture in an intriguing manner.
These stories offer glimpses into the characters’ lives and interactions. Still, the most captivating aspects for me were the commentaries and interviews by the creators of this comic, offering their insights into the world of the X-Men.
Marvel Voices X-Men #1 reinforces ideas that I thought were fundamental to the X-Men. The notion that the X-Men symbolize the Civil Rights movement is prevalent. The comic’s commentary notes that the mutant metaphor wasn’t originally intended to reflect civil rights struggles; it was incorporated retroactively. However, Vita Ayala, a comic writer who penned the introduction, states, “Like mutants, we just are, and we will not be denied our humanity.” Without this context, the stories might feel disconnected and, at times, uninspired. Yet, we gain a deeper understanding of these narratives by viewing these mutants as embodiments of humanity, even the most deadly among them. When you are in that headspace, this comic is a great read.
I will always recommend the Marvel Voices series, but this book holds a special place in my heart. The diverse range of art and writing styles makes it challenging to assign a simple rating. Skill levels vary, with contributions from both veterans and newcomers. Despite this, I believe a solid 4 out of 5 fits this book. Dive into Marvel Voices: X-Men #1 and rediscover why these characters are more than mutants—they also embody humanity.
