Superman and Lois Renewed for Surprise Fourth Season
Earlier this week the Hollywood Reporter broke the news of cancellations and renewals at the CW, notably with Superman and Lois making the renewal cut.
Per THR:
The renewals for Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming mean that The CW will carry over four scripted series from its 2022-23 lineup; they join Homecoming’s parent show, All American, and Walker. Both Superman & Lois and Homecoming will have shorter runs next season, with the former going for 10 episodes (vs. 13 this year) in its fourth season and the latter for 13 for its third, down from 15.
By contrast the Batman-inspired Gotham Knights was canceled after only one season. THR also points out:
Under new owners Nexstar, the network is looking to reduce costs with smaller episode orders and other reductions as the company looks to make The CW profitable (which it never was, nor was it designed to be, under former owners CBS and Warner Bros.) by 2025. All American — the only show of the four currently on The CW’s fall lineup — and Walker are also expected to have shorter runs and be mixed in with acquired series like Canadian drama Sullivan’s Crossing (which has been renewed for a second season) and former AMC series 61st Street as well as unscripted series ranging from Whose Line Is It Anyway to Inside the NFL.
Adding …
Superman & Lois was the second most watched show on The CW in 2022-23 — but also among the more expensive series on the network.
Preexisting cast contracts, sets, and costumes will make Superman and Lois a cheaper show to produce overall, compared to bringing on newer genre content. However, the current WGA strike will make any active progress on a fourth season difficult, to state the least.
Given the reduced episode order it doesn’t feel like a jump to assume this cut back 10 episode order for Superman and Lois will be the final 10 episodes of the last vestige of the Arrowverse.
The Nimona Trailer is Here
On Wednesday this week Netflix dropped the first trailer for the upcoming original animated movie, Nimona:
Nimona | Official Teaser | Netflix
No Description
Nimona is based on the original webcomic-turned-graphic novel by N. Stevenson of the same name.
Per IMDB:
When a knight in a futuristic medieval world is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona — a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature he’s sworn to destroy.
As someone who read Nimona when it was first released as a graphic novel, I can confirm the movie looks to be a pretty faithful adaptation of the source material. Chloë Grace Moretz stars as the titular Nimona with Riz Ahmed as Ballister Boldheart.
If you’ll cast your mind all the way back to last year when Netflix animation was apparently decimated with layoffs by the very same group of executives responsible for the current WGA strike it feels nothing short of miraculous to be writing about Nimona’s impending release for you today.
Nimona streams on Netflix June 30, 2023.
Star Trek: Strange New World Season 2 Debuts
Yesterday Star Trek: Strange New Worlds launched its second season on Paramout+:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | Season 2 Official Trailer | Paramount+
No Description
Strange New Worlds is the most consistently beloved of the NuTrek shows, inviting admiration from both critics and fans alike. Much like the season premiers of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds kicks things off by retreading a lot of old territory and tropes established during the previous season.
The season opens with this dedication to actor Nichelle Nichols:
While advanced reviews were fairly positive, social media reactions to the Strange New Worlds season 2 premier episode have been mixed. Over the next few weeks it will be interesting to see whether or not the show can maintain the quality and affection it garnered during the first season or whether that was a lucky fluke.x
