Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
During the first season of The Rings of Power Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel startled book readers the world over when she informed characters in-universe and viewers that her husband had died. Celeborn was portrayed by Marton Csokas (The Bourne Supremacy, Into the Badlands), opposite Cate Blanchett’s original portrayal of Galadriel. Together they have two children: a son named Amroth and a daughter named Celebrían.
Celebrían is probably the most important in this equation as she goes on to marry Elrond (yes! Who we know from the movies and the show!), and eventually becomes the mother to three children of their own: twin sons Elladan and Elrohir, as well as daughter Arwen.
If Celeborn is dead, as Galadriel expressed, then the chances of these Tolkien canon-accurate characters making it to the screen in The Rings of Power seems low. However, in a recent screening event showrunner Patrick McKay teased:
“We know there are things that the two of them do together in terms of progeny that they will issue, realms they will found, all kinds of things. So it would be very hard to believe that she would never see him again. But let’s see.”
Neither would co-showrunner J.D. Payne confirm whether or not Celeborn was actually dead.
Those of us who are comic book readers know that “dead” doesn’t always mean “dead”. I’m here to plant the seed of the idea for you that The Rings of Power Galadriel may be mistaken. Celeborn is likely still alive and could possibly be making an appearance in the second season of the show. Unlike last week with Círdan I don’t have a casting prediction I feel super strong about based on the talent we have seen thus far. If any Spoilerties reading have strong guesses please share them with me in the comments section! I want to know!
