The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
THE AUTUMNAL #8
Writer: Daniel Kraus
Artist: Chris Shehan
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With Sybil’s fate uncertain, Kat at last faces off with Clementine Biddle — who is not what we expect. Grief and rage power this horrifying finale.
INGRID: And it all comes down to this! Kat has fought tooth and nail to hold onto a life in Comfort Notch despite the whispers and hostility. But the gathering on the Autumnal Equinox pulled her and Sybil inexorably in. Is there any escape from Clementine Biddle?
CHIBI USAGI: ATTACK OF THE HEEBIE CHIBIS
Writer: Julie and Stan Sakai
Artist: Julie and Stan Sakai
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $10.99
SOLICITATION: The rich world of Usagi Yojimbo, now more accessible to readers of all ages in this chibi-style original graphic novel. Stan Sakai’s beloved rabbit samurai has won countless fans (and awards!) over his 35-year history, thanks to a clever blend of thrilling action, heartwarming characters, and a realistic portrayal of Japanese culture. Chibi-Usagi brings these fun and thoughtful stories to middle-grade readers as an original graphic novel packed with adorable art and captivating energy. While fishing for freshwater eels, Chibi-Usagi, Tomoe, and Gen rescue a Dogu, a clay creature from Japan’s prehistory. The Dogu’s village has been enslaved by the Salamander King and his Heebie-Chibi minions and forced to work in their mines. Chibi-Usagi and his friends must rescue the Dogu people and eliminate the threat of the Salamander King forever in this feature-length story of adventure, humor, and slippery eels.
INGRID: Just when you couldn’t image the world of Usagi Yojimbo getting any better, here is a terrific all-ages version that captures everything we love about Usagi, but adds even more fun, energy, and humor.
MIGHTY CRUSADERS: THE SHIELD #1
Writer: David Gallaher
Artist: Rob Liefeld
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THE SHIELD IS BACK! America’s first patriotic superhero, The Shield, has persevered through countless challenges and always manages to come out on top! But what happens when forces beyond anyone’s control threaten The Shield’s legacy of fighting for truth and justice? Follow Joe Higgins as The Shield (and get ready for some surprises!) in this new one-shot comic featuring art by Rob Liefeld and a story by David Gallaher.
MATTHEW: I’m always cautiously optimistic about Archie reboots, because… Well, honestly, they never really last. So even if this one is a complete train wreck thanks to Rob, I’m confident that even if the book goes more than three issue, Liefeld won’t. And hey, it may be awesome!
POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE EDGE OF DARKNESS #1
Writer: Frank Gogol
Artist: Simone Ragazzoni
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: Answering Zordon’s call, the Phantom Ranger investigates the aftermath of an Empyreal attack. Only to discover their connection to an ancient evil he encountered long ago… which may have finally returned to threaten the entire universe.
MATTHEW: After the Astronema one-shot was good, I’m psyched to see one of the most mysterious Power Rangers characters get his due. Will we finally get some answers? I’m here to find out, even with the super-size pricetag.
THE UNITED STATES OF CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
Writer: Josh Trujillo, Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Dale Eaglesham, Jan Bazaldua
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The shield has been stolen! No one understands the value of the shield like those who’ve wielded it, so Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson set out on a road trip across America to chase down the thief.
But instead, they find the Captains, everyday people from all walks of life who’ve taken up the mantle of Captain America to defend their communities. And for some reason, the shield thief wants them all dead. Can Sam and Steve get to them first?
MATTHEW: Dale Eaglesham art is a draw by itself, but I’ve been enjoying Cantwell’s take on Iron Man, and the everyday Captains America that Marvel has been teasing seem like fun. My only complaint is the Alex Ross cover, as Eagelsham’s art is so much more attractive to my eye.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you.
