The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
AFTER REALM QUARTERLY #3
Writer: Michael Avon Oeming
Artist: Michael Avon Oeming
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: Oona encounters the dead god, Odin! With his body and mind taken over by maggot-like beings, Oona must escape from its wrath as she fights her way through his larvae children. From the writer of Thor: Ragnarok and co-creator of POWERS, MICHAEL AVON OEMING.
CHRISTOPHER: After Realm is one of those books that I forget about inbetween releases. However, whenever I see it in previews; I am excited to pick it up again and explore Oona’s character arc.
AN UNKINDNESS OF RAVENS #1
Writer: Dan Panosian
Artist: Marianna Ignazzi
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Writer Dan Panosian (Slots) and artist Marianna Ignazzi present a supernatural mystery, where not all the witches burned during the Salem Witch Trials — and the ones that survived did so together, protecting the ancient secrets entrusted to them for generations. They call themselves the Ravens. Wilma is the new girl in school, and she plans to go completely unnoticed — except that she bears an eerie resemblance to the Raven member Waverly, who just went missing. The truth behind Waverly’s disappearance will put the entire coven in danger — and Wilma will have to rely on power she never knew she had to save her new friends.
INGRID: This book sounds so cool! Imagine a high school drama where there’s a legitimate missing person mystery in the background behind a social battle where one of the cliques is made of the witches of today. And Wilma, the new girl, ends up caught in the middle before she knows what’s going on. I can’t wait to dive in.
STEPHEN: Lots of fun, and an introduction to a magical world and a deeper mystery. Really enjoyed this book, just kinda wish the first chapter was longer.
THE AUTUMNAL #1
Writer: Daniel Kraus
Artist: Chris Shehan
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Following the death of her estranged mother, Kat Somerville and her daughter, Sybil, flee a difficult life in Chicago for the quaint–and possibly pernicious–town of Comfort Notch, New Hampshire. From NY Times best-selling author, Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water, Trollhunters, The Living Dead), and rising star Chris Shehan, comes a haunting vision of America’s prettiest autumn.
INGRID: Autumn – a season both beautiful and melancholy. What a theme and setting for horror book! There is some lovely imagery here, and Kat and her daughter share not only a natural closeness, but one forged from bonds of shared hardships. If you’re a fan of the creepy and supernatural, I think this is one to pay attention to.
CANTO II: HOLLOW MEN #2 (OF 5)
Writer: David M. Booher
Artist: Drew Zucker
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Book 2 of Canto continues! Canto leads his friends on a journey to save his people and his first stop is his friend Aulaura, the mysterious warrior who helped him fight the Furies in the City of Dis and escape from the Shrouded Man. But what shall they do when they find Aulaura’s village full of hollow men?
CHRISTOPHER: Canto has earned a place in my heart. I root for the little guy just trying to save his people and fight against the evil Shrouded Man.
X OF SWORDS: CREATION #1
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Pepe Larraz
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Release Date: $6.99
SOLICITATION: A tower. A mission. A gathering of armies.
CHRISTOPHER: House/Powers of X has set up high expectations for the X-men universe and I wonder if this is going to be the moment we see it all fall apart. Krakoa is too good to be true in my opinion and I want to see the threads begin to tear.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Your smile brings happiness to everyone you meet.
