IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALL-AMERICA COMIX ONE-SHOT
Writer: Joe Casey
Artist: Sonia Harris
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Her last name is VASQUEZ! Her first name…says it all! And when confronted with the hidden secret of the universe, you won’t believe the cosmic truth she uncovers! Brought to you by the Wildcats Version 3.0 team of JOE CASEY and DUSTIN NGUYEN-reunited for the first time in fifteen years!
CHRISTOPHER: This looks relevant to today’s issues and I am always supportive of a non-white male protagonist. What catches my attention here is that it is based in La Puente, CA which I have visited many times.
MATTHEW: The creator of America Chavez has created a VERY similar character, that he insists is completely different, and is going to tell the stories that he wants to tell with her… Whether it’s genius or cheese sandwich remains to be seen, but I want to see what happens here, and welcome an era where creators can do what they wish with their creations.
But, boy, I’m leery.
THE BOYS: DEAR BECKY #2
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: Russell Braun
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As Hughie’s discoveries take him down a highly dangerous rabbit hole, what he learns about the good old days reveals a strangely conflicted Butcher- at the worst possible time, as the Boys investigate a particularly insidious supe threat.
MATTHEW: I did NOT like the first issue, but I want to read this one to see if it’s also a train wreck. Because I am apparently a comic book masochist.
DUEL IDENTITY #1
Writer: Elaine Lee
Artist: Jonathan Lam
Publisher: Red Giant Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Artemis is the world’s greatest secret asset. She’s a spy, assassin and superhuman secret agent all rolled into one – until her cover is blown! Now she must adopt a public persona as the world’s first superheroine, Andromeda. Can this trained killer pretend to be something she’s not?
MATTHEW: I’ll be honest: I’m only wanting to read this one to see if they have a reason to use the wrong spelling of “duel.’
RONIN ISLAND #12
Writer: Greg Pak
Artist: Giannis Milonogiannis
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As the battle dust clears, the Island will never be the same. The world beyond their waters is a dangerous place, and it’s up to Hana and Kenichi to make one final decision, one that will shape the future of their home forever.
CHRISTOPHER: I love the aesthetics of this series. Adding oriental elements and two strong protagonists is right up my wheelhouse. I have been impressed with the series since its inception and this is no different.
INGRID: This has been a stunning series, and it’s all been building up to this. Hana and Kenichi left the Island for the mainland, and unwittingly revealed it as a ripe target for the Shogun, his monsters, and the bandits. Now that battle has come home to the island, and the two young people are themselves hugely changed. It’s a historical drama with plenty of action and the awful monsters thrown in for good measure. You don’t want to miss this one!
ROBOT OVERLORD: Be tactful; overlook your own opportunity.
