The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BLEED THEM DRY #1
Writer: Eliot Rahal
Artist: Dike Ruan
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The year is 3333. Earth is in a state of recovery. Vampires are real, and though far less populous, they thrive alongside humans in the Japanese-engineered mega-city known as Asylum. People have come to understand that some Immortals are good, some are bad, and most navigate the world without incident. There is peace. That is…until now. Someone is brutally murdering vampires. And Detective Harper Halloway has been assigned to the case. To solve it, she’ll have to unearth a much deeper truth: The future of humanity has been edited.
INGRID: Vault has an incredible track record of good – and interesting – books, and this one caught my eye. Vampires co-existing with people in a futuristic setting is a pretty cool start but toss in a murder mystery plot with vampires as the victims, and this sounds like it’s not going to be a rehash of old tropes. I’m excited to take a look at this one.
DIE #11
Writer: Keiron Gillen
Artist: Stephanie Hans
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “THE GREAT GAME,” Part One. Half the party is ruling a whole empire. The other half is on the run. Neither has it easy. There is nothing easy in this game, especially when the stakes get shockingly real. The most epic arc of DIE begins as it means to go on: messily.
CHRISTOPHER: This has been one of the most enjoyable series in recent history for me. It has everything I ever wanted: a complicated world system, references to tabletop gaming, and a rich cast of characters. I am so glad that this series is able to come back for its third story arc.
MATTHEW: The first arcs of this book have been fascinating mechanically, narratively and visually, and I recommend it to fans of Critical Hit or RPGs, as well as comic nerds who want something new and different.
GREEN LANTERN 80TH ANNIVERSARY SUPER-SPECTACULAR #1
Writer: Geoff Johns, Mariko Tamaki, Peter J. Tomasi, Jeff Lemire, Robert Venditti, Dennis O’Neil, Sina Grace, Charlotte Fullerton, Ron Marz, James Tynion IV, Others
Artist: Ivan Reis, Fernando Pasarin, Darryl Banks, Mike Grell, Rafa Sandoval, Others
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $9.99
SOLICITATION: In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil could ever escape their sight! The Green Lanterns are celebrating 80 years of keeping the DC Universe safe. Join us to see tales of all of the universe’s most legendary Green Lanterns: Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and appearances from other cosmic favorites! A legendary lineup of creators including Geoff Johns, Peter J. Tomasi, Jeff Lemire, Ivan Reis, and others will be keeping the galaxy glowing bright!
MATTHEW: The fact that, unlike with Flash’s 80th, they seem to be centering the character actually having the anniversary makes me happy. We’ll see if the material is worth the hefty price tag.
IMMORTAL HULK #34
Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Butch Guice
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Thoughtful Man is here – and his dreadful thoughts are vast and dark enough to swallow even the Devil. Samuel Sterns walked through the Green Door and gained knowledge. Follow him through the journey of his life – from his rebirth to his final experiment. Follow the Leader.
MATTHEW: The most consistently frightening and entertaining comic in Marvel’s arsenal for more than thirty issues now, and I still worry that you guys are sleepin’ on it. Check it out. You’ll thank me.
SEVEN DAYS #7 (OF 7)
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Jose Luis and Jonas Trindade
Publisher: Lion Forge Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: DAY SEVEN: The final day is here and it all comes to a head in New Orleans. The remaining heroes: Kino, Summit, Accell, and Moonrise make their final stand against the Obsidian Titan with help from villains and allies alike. While the teen heroes: Cosmosis, Amina, Quincredible, and a new heroine go after the source: Khrelan himself. With the clock ticking, it’s a rush to save humanity, but even if the alien threat is defeated, what, exactly, will be left of humanity?
CHRISTOPHER: This has been my introduction to the Catalyst Prime world and the roster of heroes is amazing. Huge world crossover events are usually a hit or miss for me but this one introduced the characters very well and brought me into the plot. I look forward to see how this all wraps up.
WICKED THINGS #2
Writer: John Allison
Artist: Max Sarin
Publisher: BOOM! Box
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: At the Savoy Hotel, in the aftermath of an attack on legendary detective Kendo Miyamoto, Lottie Grote finds herself the number one suspect in a potential muder investigation. There might be a way out, though, but only if she’s willing to make a deal with the devil… Scotland Yard!
INGRID: Former child detective superstar, Lottie Grote, stumbles upon an attempted murder and finds herself number one suspect. She is confident that she can prove her innocence, except for the pesky fact that she’s in police custody. Lottie is a wonderful mix of unfiltered opinions and anxiety, making for an entertaining romp that gives the teen detective trope a sharp twist.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Serious trouble will bypass you.
