The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
A MAN AMONG YE #1
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Craig Cermak
Publisher: Image Comics Inc./Top Cow Productions
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: High adventure on the high seas in the waning days of piracy, when men were men, and the best pirates were…women? Writer STEPHANIE PHILLIPS (Butcher of Paris, Descendent) and artist CRAIG CERMAK (Red Team, Voltron) bring to life the tale of Anne Bonny and Mary Read as they hoist the skull and crossbones, draw cutlasses, and seek a treasure that will make them legends. In an era when sailing with women was thought to be bad luck, Anne and Mary might just be the only people capable of saving the pirate way of life.
CHRISTOPHER: I really like this concept for a series. Mary Read and Anne Bonny are two of the most famed female pirates of all time. I can’t wait to see the creative team’s interpretation of these two historical figures! In history, they are usually joined by Captain Jack Rackham and I wonder what role he will play in the series.
INGRID: To be perfectly fair, you had me at pirates, but considering this is a tale involving Anne Bonny and Mary Read, I am all in. Women pirates were rare, but not entirely unheard of, and their heyday at the twilight of the age of pirates has got to be full of opportunities to tell an interesting story.
STEPHEN: This looks like a fun issue, and definitely one I am picking up this week.
THE GREEN LANTERN SEASON 2 #4
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: Liam Sharp
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: GOLDEN GIANTS OF NEO-PANGAEA Guest-starring the Flash, as the Emerald Warrior and Fastest Man Alive put their friendship on the line to fight for their lives on a world changed beyond all recognition! Is the world ready…
JONATHAN: If what you’re looking for is just some good old fashioned comic book fun, with just a pinch of wackiness, Grant Morrison’s time on Green Lantern has had that in spades. It hasn’t all been great, but there’s no denying that each issue has been interesting. Throw in The Flash and this seems like a recipe for a fascinating read.
LADY ZORRO #1
Writer: Pat Shand
Artist: Vincenzo Carratu
Publisher: American Mythology Productions
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Who is Lady Zorro? Like an avenging phantom, Lady Zorro haunts the arid wastes of the southern California desert, defiantly fighting against the tyrannical forces of the Spanish Empire, but how did she come to be a revered, legendary figure in Native American folklore? In an all-new take on the Zorro mythos, we’ll learn those answers and more in this special, one-shot tale of supernatural adventure that introduces you to a Lady Zorro we have never before seen! A secret cabal of Spanish Army soldiers who call themselves “The Pr digo” are using stolen, Native American magic to power their reign of terror over the native inhabitants of Alta California, and no one but Lady Zorro stands in their way. But will her incredible, acrobatic and sword skills be enough to stem the slaughter, led by the hideous, transformed Father Serra, who wields dark magic and commands an army of monstrous, demon coyotes?
MATTHEW: I thought we already had a Lady Zorro and Lady Rawhide as well, but this sounds like it could be interesting.
LUDOCRATS #2
Writer: Keiron Gillen, Jim Rossignol
Artist: Tamra Bonvillain
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “SNAKE HUNT” Part 6! We’re at the midpoint, and the thrills are just getting started! Cobra Commander wants a Snake Eyes of his own. The Joes have other ideas. It’ll take two armies to settle this dispute! It’s all hands on deck for both G.I. Joe and Cobra as living legend Larry Hama and fan-favorite artist Robert Atkins continue their massive 10-issue event… featuring EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF G.I. JOE! There’s no halftime break in this contest, folks! All action, all the time!
MATTHEW: The first issue of this was a mixed bag, but the parts that worked make me want to see where it’s going from here.
THE MAN WHO EFFED UP TIME #3
Writer: John Layman
Artist: Karl Mostert
Publisher: Aftershock Comics

SOLICITATION: The armored Neanderthal foot-soldiers who serve the evil emperor Abraham Lincoln VI have orders to bring in time-traveling f#%&-up Sean Bennett dead or alive- and they choose dead! That’s right, we kill our lead character on page two of issue #3. So, uh…what’s next? Well, either a lotta blank pages…or a surprise twist so amazing YOU DARE NOT MISS THIS ISSUE!!! (Spoiler: it’s the latter.) Presenting a time-twisted sci-fi action-comedy, a butterfly effect noir, by multiple Eisner-winning writer John Layman (Chew, ELEANOR & THE EGRET) and talented new-comer Karl Mostert. Order it today…before time runs out!
MATTHEW: Sometimes a title is all you need…
WONDER WOMAN: DEAD EARTH #3
Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $6.99
SOLICITATION: The revelation of the Haedras’ true nature overwhelms even the mighty Amazon Princess, forcing Diana to seek out the one person who can help her: Superman. But what Diana finds at the Fortress of Solitude is one of the most shocking secrets in the history of Wonder Woman.
JONATHAN: After the ending of #2, this one is a must-read. But, there’s been little teases about what’s happened to the DC Universe as a whole throughout the first two issues and I’ve reached the point where I either want some answers, or for the story to move away from those hints altogether.
WYND #1
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Michael Dialynas
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Wynd lives a quiet life in Pipetown — working at the local tavern, out of sight in the secret rooms beneath the floorboards, often stealing away to catch glimpses of the son of the castle’s groundskeeper as he works. But Wynd also has a secret… magical blood betrayed by his pointed ears, forbidden within the city limits. His shaggy hair has obscured them for most of his life, but now that Wynd is a teenager they are growing too unwieldy to hide. Joined by his best friend Oakley and Thorn, the groundskeeper’s son, Wynd’s strange dreams and an encounter with the city guard send him on the most dangerous adventure he could imagine, where Wynd will discover the magic in the world around him and, most importantly, the magic within himself. The GLAAD Award-winning team of writer James Tynion IV (Batman, The Woods) and artist Michael Dialynas (The Woods) present a new young adult fantasy series about learning to spread your wings no matter the dangers that life puts in your way.
CHRISTOPHER: Something about this kid jumping on the cover immediately catches my attention and appeals to my artistic aesthetic. The solicitation also implies a story about a powerful kid having to keep his power secret so he is not feared. On top of that you are getting 40 pages of story in this issue which allows the creative team to take more time with establishing the characters instead of rushing through content. It hits a lot of my checkboxes and will definitely be looking into this story.
INGRID: I enjoy fantasy and coming-of-age stories. I think this book has a lot of potential, and I like the trope of magic being rare and secret and hidden for some reason. I am intrigued to see what sort of adventure they go on.
STEPHEN: If fantasy RPG is your thing, then WYND is going to be the book you want to add to your read pile this week. Good art. Fantastic setup in this first issue. Highly recommended.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Never miss a chance to keep your mouth shut.
