IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
KILLADELPHIA #3
Writer: Rodney Barnes
Artist: Jason Shawn Alexander
Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “SINS OF THE FATHER,” Part Three. Founding father John Adams has stepped out of the shadows to reveal himself as the undead source of Philadelphia’s vampire outbreak. With a legion at his command, he makes plans to cut the rot from America’s core. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Jose must fight for their lives at the city morgue as the dead rise off their slabs.
INGRID: This book is really something! It’s edgy, it’s hard-hitting, and it sets the horror of a really smart vampire against the political and social backdrop of our country today. Can a vampiric founding father reboot America and make it a nation of vampires? Can James and J.J. Sangster get past their relationship to stop him?
PROTECTOR #1
Writer: Simon Roy and Daniel Bensen
Artist: Artyom Trakhanov, Jason Wordlie, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SERIES PREMIERE! From SIMON ROY (Prophet), Sideways Award-winning author DANIEL M. BENSEN (Junction), ARTYOM TRAKHANOV (UNDERTOW), JASON WORDIE (GOD COUNTRY), and HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU (Red Sonja) comes a sci-fi adventure equal parts Conan the Barbarian, Mad Max, and The Expanse.
Of all the tribes that dwell in the hot ruins of far-future North America, the Hudsoni reign supreme, but even they fear and obey the godlike Devas. When the Devas warn of an old-world demon in the conquered city of Shikka-Go, Hudsoni war chief First Knife decides to deal with the threat personally.
CHRISTOPHER: I love new stories and this one seems rather unique. It appears to add elements of spirituality, futuristic technology, and dystopian elements. Worth a quick look for me.
SEA OF STARS VOL 01
Writer: Jason Aaron and Denis “Hopeless Hallum
Artist: Stephen Green
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price $14.99
SOLICITATION: Being a space trucker may sound like a cool job, but in reality it can be boring as hell. So when recently widowed Gil gets a long-haul gig across the universe, he figures it’s safe enough to bring his young son Kadyn along for the ride. But when their “big rig” gets bitten in half by a gigantic Space Leviathan, Gil is separated from his young son-with a breached suit that’s venting oxygen at an alarming rate. He’ll have to defy the odds and stay alive long enough to rescue Kadyn. But Kadyn seems to be getting all the help he needs from a talking Space Monkey riding a Space Dolphin… or maybe it’s the strange powers he’s suddenly manifesting.
From the writing duo of JASON AARON (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, Thor) and DENNIS HALLUM (Cloak & Dagger, Vader: Dark Visions), with dazzling art by STEPHEN GREEN (Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.) and cosmic colors by RICO RENZI (Spider-Gwen) comes an intense, galaxy-spanning adventure with all the scope and heart of the The Neverending Story crossed with imaginative weirdness of Miyazaki.
Collects SEA OF STARS #1-5
CHRISTOPHER: I am of the mindset that TPBs are a good way to take in content and I put this particular series in the back of my mind when the first volume came out. I’ve read some of the reviews and I’m still on board to give this series a try. I also have a very young daughter and perhaps that parental relationship is applicable to my sensibilities.
SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #5
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Werther Dell’edera
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The time for investigation is over. The hunt begins, as Erica Slaughter brings her namesake to the monsters of Archer’s Peak.
INGRID: Erica Slaughter has finally found the monster’s lair, but what seemed like a tough but pretty standard fight is complicated by the civilians who happen to be around. There is so much mental suffering and torment in this book, but by capturing some of the facets of emotional trauma, it brings out horror on so many levels. Top it off with some dynamic art, and it’s a terrific representative of the genre.
X-FORCE #6
Writer: Ben Percy
Artist: Joshua Cassara
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: DEADLY CHOICES CARRY DARK CONSEQUENCES!
First, Domino and Forge have to pick up the pieces as the team faces a major setback! Then, Beast takes matters into his own hands when a piece of new technology threatens the safety of the nation.
CHRISTOPHER: Out of the new X-men runs that have come out, this is the one that kept my attention the most. It is a little grittier than the other books currently being published and features Domino with some pretty bad face scaring. I’ll probably follow this series for a long while.
ROBOT OVERLORD: IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! GET OUT THERE AND READ SOME COMICS!
