IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ASTRO HUSTLE #1
Writer: Jai Nitz
Artist: Tom Reilly
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Chen Andalou, the black sheep of a prominent activist family, returns after being accidentally put in cryo-stasis for sixty years. Chen, a cosmic criminal, wakes up to find his younger brother is now the President of the Galaxy. Chen does what he knows best: he steals stuff and causes a problem.
MATTHEW: Sometimes, you can just read a solicitation and know that this is a book you have to read, even if it crashes and burns. If you’ve ever heard of ‘Sonic Disruptors’, you know what I’m talking about.
STEPHEN: OMG! This is all kinds of crazy. It is like Barbarella meets Ice Pirates, with the Star Wars disco theme song playing throughout. It is a strange mixture of British comics from the ’70s with today’s modern storytelling. Damn good comics.
CHAMPIONS #3
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Steven Cummings
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The ultimate sacrifice or the ultimate betrayal? Ms. Marvel will find out the truth, even if it kills her! Jim Zub (AVENGERS, UNCANNY AVENGERS) and Steven Cummings (Wayward, Legends of the Dark Knight) take the Champions into new territory, and the team will never be the same.
MATTHEW: I’m a sucker for a mismatched team of altruistic teenagers in the New Mutants, All-New All-Different X-Men and/or Legion of Super-Heroes traditions, and this book has both the large cast I love and a great creative team. You should check it out.
DIE #4
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Stephanie Hans
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “FANTASY HEARTBREAKER,” Part Four – Our heroes reach the civilization of Glass Town and do what heroes have always done upon reaching civilization. As in, go to the pub. As it’s DIE, you can guess people don’t exactly get happy drunk.
MATTHEW: It’s the first arc of a Kieron Gillen book, you know something bad is coming but you just can’t put it down. This is a complex and really pretty book.
THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN #1
Writer: Christopher Hastings
Artist: David Hahn
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: CHRISTOPHER HASTINGS (The Unbelievable Gwenpool! Secret Agent Deadpool! Adventure Time! I Am Groot!) and DAVID HAHN (Batman ’66! Bombshells: United!) proudly present a story from a time when there wasn’t internet, but there WERE cyborgs! It’s the 1970s. Things are going great. Steve Austen (used to be an astronaut, now has robo-parts & a laser eye) heads to Japan to help Secret Agent Niko Abe stop a madman with missiles. Steve figures, no sweat. But then…sweat. How’s Steve going to complete his mission, when his fancy $6,000,000 body starts. DRASTICALLY) depreciating in value!?
INGRID: What can I say – this intrigues me. Intrigue and adventure with the Six Million Dollar Man, and set in the 1970s? I think this has the potential to be a lot of fun.
STEPHEN: This looks like it could be great, and we have a review coming up that says the book is a great adaptation, so I think this is a must read this week.
YOUNG JUSTICE #3
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Viktor Bogdanovic and Patrick Gleason
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Young Justice is back, baby! Bendis and Gleason reunite all your favorites in one place! Robin (Tim Drake-the best Robin) and Amethyst (best Princess of Gemworld!) team with Wonder Girl, Jinny Hex and the new Teen Lantern (not even close to the best Green Lantern) to take back the mysterious Gemworld from the evil forces of dark Opal. Meanwhile, the reunited Impulse and Superboy have a lot of explaining to do. Also in this issue, find out where Connor Kent has been all this time. This is a big issue for Superboy fans!
INGRID: I enjoy books with young heroes, and this is a great team. Amythest and Gemworld are a fascinating tie-in as well. I’m really looking forward to this one.
